A couple had a 30-year-old daughter. They wished for grandchildren and saved up money for their future. The daughter ultimately decided not to have children, so the couple decided the use the money elsewhere, which caused conflict. Here’s what they had to say:
They Wanted Grandchildren
The husband explained, “My wife and I have only one daughter. We always wished we could have had more kids, but due to medical complications that I won’t go into, we only had our girl. Because of that, we’ve always dreamed of being grandparents, and we now have almost $350K saved up to help raise our future grandkids and cover their college expenses.”
But Their Daughter Didn’t Want Children
The couple never pressured their daughter to have children. However, she was aware of their savings and what the purpose was. Recently, their daughter made the decision not to have kids and underwent a tubal ligation.
They Respected Her Decision
The man explained, “I won’t lie, I’m really disappointed, but not in our daughter. It’s her life, and it’s not our place to impose anything on her.”
She Came For Lunch
One day the daughter came over to their home for lunch, and she brought up the topic of the money and asked what happened to it.
They Wanted To Spend The Money On Themselves
The couple explained they planned to use it to reduce the man’s working hours for retirement and go traveling together.
Their Daughter Seemed Uncomfortable
Upon hearing this, their daughter grew silent.
She Was Furious
Suddenly, she unleashed her anger, accusing her parents of punishing her for not having children and taking away the money that she believed would have been hers. The situation escalated and she stormed out of the house.
And Wouldn’t Speak To Them
Their daughter then refused to talk to them and aired her grievances on social media. The couple also received disapproving messages from their daughter’s friends.
Did The Couple Do The Right Thing?
The couple did not disown their daughter and she will still inherit their assets upon their passing. They turned to the internet for advice on whether their decision was wrong.
The Internet Responded
One person said, “It’s her fertility and choice to have children. She made her choice. It’s your money and your choice how to spend it. You made your choice. Blasting you online sounds like emotional manipulation to get her way.”
Another Person Commented
“That money was never meant for her. It would have gone directly for things for the grandchildren, to improve their lives. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
