For the first week or so, the person in the wheelchair observed these parents abusing the accessible parking spaces, as they were closer to the school. They hoped to find any legitimate reason for this behavior but found none. The parking placards were absent, and it was clear these parents were parking illegally for their own convenience.

However, the person still believed they were right in fighting for their community on this issue. “You are teaching your children to take from us in everyday situations when we rely on these spots to have our basic needs met”, they explained. They saw it as a matter of teaching children about empathy and respecting the rights of others.

Very few people shared the opinion of the offenders, with everyone defending the person’s actions. “Aren’t the accessible parking spots for those with a disability’s convenience?” one reader asked rhetorically.
Encouraging Selfishness
Other commenters were quick to point out that just because there were several accessible parking spaces free, does not justify their use by able-bodied people. “They’re not supposed to park there!”, someone exclaimed. “And you’re right, they are setting a very poor example for their kids and basically showing them that selfishness is okay. “
Get the Police Involved
One person suggested that getting the police involved could rapidly stop the offenders in their tracks: “It’s illegal to even pull into a disabled space, even if you don’t turn off your engine, and the ticket for using one is quite high (up to $1000)”, they wrote. “Call the police and let them know what’s happening and when pick up time is.”
