A 27-year-old woman who is childfree but disabled, had a harrowing experience while grocery shopping. Here is what she had to say:
A Tough but Necessary Decision

All the disabled parking spots were taken, mostly by people without plates, so she decided to use one of the “family parking” spots instead. She needed the extra space to get in and out of her car with her mobility disability, and the regular sports spots were too difficult for her to navigate, especially if people parked too close to the driver’s door.
Not Taken Lightly

The woman never usually used family parking spots but she didn’t have another option in this case. She never took these kinds of decisions lightly as she didn’t want to inconvenience any other person but she needed the extra space.
Rude Lady

When she returned to her car, a woman in her 40s with a young child bolted at her and shouted, “you don’t look like you got children!” The woman was confused but quickly realized that the woman was upset about her using the family parking spot.
She Tried to Have Her Car Towed!

She tried to explain herself, but the woman kept cutting her off and berating her for being entitled to “her” parking spot. The woman had even gone to the store manager to demand that the woman’s car be towed, but the employee had denied her request.
Shaken and Unsure

The woman was left feeling shaken and unsure if she had done something wrong. She took to the internet to ask for feedback, wondering if she was the jerk for using a spot for families when the disabled spots were all taken.
Support From Strangers

She received an outpouring of support and encouragement from strangers who told her that she had every right to use the family parking spot and that the woman who confronted her was in the wrong.
Highlights the Need

The woman’s experience highlights the challenges that disabled people face when it comes to parking. Despite having a disability sign for her car, she was unable to find a disabled parking spot and had to resort to using a family parking spot instead.
A Difficult Situation

While it is understandable that parents with young children need extra space too, it is important for people to remember that disabled people also have unique needs when it comes to parking.
Harassment and Bullying

The woman who confronted the disabled woman was clearly in the wrong for harassing her and demanding that her car be towed. It is never okay to bully someone for using a parking spot that they are entitled to use, regardless of whether or not they fit a certain stereotype or expectation.
Basic Needs

Overall, the woman’s experience is a reminder that disabled people deserve to have their needs accommodated and respected, especially when it comes to something as basic as parking. It is important for people to be mindful of the challenges that disabled people face and to be supportive and understanding of their needs.
The Internet Responded

This commenter wrote, “This lady is an hypocrite. Those spots are not meant for parents with kids that can walk either. They are meant for pregnant women/people with babies in strollers. She is a lazy person and was mad she had to walk 10 seconds more.”
More Internet Responses

Another person commented and said this, “Those spots are like the special seats on busses: they’re for people who NEED them, not for those who are just mildly inconvenienced by using the regular ones. People with kids in strollers, or with several smaller children (because safer while getting all the kids in and out), people with mobility issues (disabilities, elderly, pregnant, etc) and so on are all fine. It’s need based, not a privilege.”
