A Man Confronted an Ignorant Teacher Who Kept Mispronouncing His Son’s Name, After the Principal Was Involved, the Teacher Sent the Father a Rude Email

The son of a Filipino man had begun to learn English at school. The father was very proud that even before school, the son excelled in the language: “My son is fluent in English, he reads and writes very well.” However, the actions of one teacher made school life more difficult for the man’s son.

Wrong Pronunciation

The son, who was named Eugenio, had been experiencing a problem at school with his new English teacher. The teacher persistently mispronounced the son’s name as “Euo-G-nio.”

Embarrassing and Distracting

This mispronunciation not only caused annoyance and embarrassment to the son but also impacted his performance in class due to teasing from classmates.

Correcting the Teacher

The boy has been trying to resolve the situation on his own. The father explained: “What my son did was correct his teacher every time he pronounced his name incorrectly. This caused the teacher to contact me to discuss my son’s behavior, which he described as impolite”.

Discussion With the Teacher

In reaction to the son’s corrections, the teacher organized a meeting with him and his father. The man politely explained that the son had the right to correct the teacher’s pronunciation since it was, in fact, incorrect. The man emphasized that the mispronunciation was affecting the son’s academic performance and causing social issues among classmates.

Teacher’s Response

The teacher responded angrily, claiming that the man’s comments were “a clear insult to his background (Hispanic) since people from all backgrounds will pronounce this particular name differently.”

The Principal’s Intervention

Thankfully, the principal of the school intervened. He requested that the teacher make the correct pronunciation of the boy’s name to resolve the matter.

Teacher’s Email

Following the meeting, the teacher sent an email to the father expressing his displeasure, writing that “he didn’t appreciate how I embarrassed him and underestimated his potential in front of the principal, and I should’ve had respect for him as a teacher instead of acting like I knew better”.

Father’s Frustration

The man found the teacher’s inability to accept constructive criticism frustrating. “I only wanted my son to be focusing on his studies and not be burdened with issues like this even if the teacher wasn’t aware of how wrong he was”, he explained.

Reconsidering His Actions

Despite truly believing that he and his son were acting appropriately and that their complaints were justified, the man began to reconsider his actions. He wondered whether this situation could have been dealt with more amicably, and despite his rudeness, empathized with the teacher after he was scolded by the principal.

Opinions From Strangers

The man sought validation for his actions, heading online for second opinions from strangers. Many people who read the story suggested ignoring the teacher and involving the principal in further action: “I’d send a copy of that email to the Principal too. That teacher has way overstepped the mark here”, one person claimed.

No One to Blame but the Teacher

Another commenter expressed their belief that the teacher deserved his scolding: “Teacher was wrong, told by the student he was wrong, told by a parent he was wrong, finally told by his boss he was wrong. He had several chances along the way to correct himself but chose to escalate the situation. He has no one to blame but himself.”

Everyone Makes Mistakes

One reader noted that it’s easy to mistake a name’s pronunciation once or twice, but further mispronunciations are simply ignorant. “When reading the name, I also would have pronounced it the way the teacher did”, they wrote. “Then your son would have corrected me, and I would have marked it so that I could pronounce it correctly in the future.”

Poor Spanish Pronunciation

To make matters worse for the teacher, a Hispanic reader revealed something amusing: “The teacher is completely wrong. Hispanics pronounce the G in the middle of this name as an English H, just like you. The Hispanic pronunciation would be “Eh-oo-hen-ee-oh.” I know this for a fact because it’s my dad’s middle name.”
