A man in his late 30s let his wife choose his kid’s names, but all hell broke loose when his son found out he was named after their segregationist grandpa. Now, the son has decided to take action and remedy the situation, but this causes further family drama.
He Had Two Kids
The man said, ‘I have 2 children, my son who is 13 and my daughter who is 15.’
His Wife Named Them
When his kids were born, he had no strong feelings toward any particular baby name, so he agreed his wife should decide. That’s when she chose to name their son after her great-grandfather. The man never questioned it or asked to learn about his wife’s grandpa. Little did he know what a grave mistake that had been.
He Couldn’t Believe it
The man’s son was at a party with his friends, sharing TikToks. The TikToks were about ‘almost names’, basically, what your parents could have named you but didn’t. The son told his friends that he was named after his great-grandfather, and they decided to research him. But what they found out shocked them.
Their Grandpa Was a Racist
Apparently, the man’s wife’s great-grandfather was a state legislator in the southern US before the civil rights movement. He was a segregationist and voted to maintain segregation. When the son discovered this, he was outraged. He came home and yelled at the man and his wife.
It Was Time for a Name Change
The man had to try and calm his son down as he was enraged by his discovery. He wanted to know why he was named after such a bad person. They argued in the car, and when they got home, they discussed it properly. His son wanted to change his name as soon as possible.
His Wife Was Upset
The man’s wife was extremely upset. She had grown up in the South and had loved her great-grandfather. She was originally from a hippie town in New England and had grown up with ignorant values.
She’d Evolved
However, the man had seen his wife evolve over the last few years. She became a much more accepting person, but she still didn’t like the fact that her son wanted to reject his great-grandfather’s namesake. It took her a long time to accept it and move on.
Other Kids Had it Worse
His son discussed his new name with his friends, and they came up with something. Some of his classmates at school used the new name, but others were mean and taunted the son. But, the boy didn’t let it get to him, stating other kids had it worse. He had a trans boy in his friendship group that he and his friends often protected from bullying.
His Sister Lashed Out
The man said, ‘Recently, he got some items with his new name, like a men’s necklace and a sign in his room.’
Should They Have Punished Her?
But, the man’s daughter was unhappy with the change. She accused her brother of being a ‘sensitive zoomer’ and claimed boys were too ‘weak’ these days. She ended up destroying her brother’s namesake items. This enraged the man, and even after she apologized, he took away her allowance until the items were paid for. When his wife asked her local mom’s group for advice, they said the punishment was too harsh. The man turned to the internet for advice.

One person said, ‘I would bet good money your daughter has already been, or is well on her way to being radicalized.’
