A man recently asked for advice about a parking spot moral quandary. One of his neighbors always parked in a spot belonging to him, but was he wrong to try and charge for the privilege? Here’s what he had to say:
The Man Lived In An Apartment Block
“I live in a small apartment building. My apartment is the largest in the building and came with two parking spots included in the rent instead of one.”
His Previous Roommate Had Used The Spots
Although the man didn’t own a vehicle himself, the parking spots had come in handy in the past. His old roommate had used one of the spots, while friends or visitors had used the other spot. It had been an ideal situation. However, that was about to change.
Someone Else Had Their Eye On The Spots
“I don’t have a vehicle and don’t use my two parking spots other than when friends come over. Then, in November, I started noticing a strange car in one of the spots. Like all the time.”
He Identified The Mysterious Car
The man learned that one of his neighbors was subletting a room in their apartment. The car belonged to the new roommate. The new roommate didn’t have a spot of her own, so she took one that seemed to be free. There was just one problem—it wasn’t free.
He Was Willing To Be Relaxed
He didn’t want to make a big deal about the roommate using his spot. After all, he didn’t have a car of his own to put there. He was also reassured to learn that the roommate was only temporary. She’d be gone before any real issues could emerge. Or would she?
She Outstayed Her Welcome
Although she had been scheduled to leave at the end of December, the man realized that the roommate was still using his spot in January. This concerned him. He’d been willing to turn a blind eye to a short-term stay, but this was getting ridiculous.
Bad Weather Made Things Worse
Winter snow soon set in, making the parking lot even harder to navigate. The man noticed that the snow was making it tough for the roommate to park properly. At times, she took up both of his spots. It meant that his guests had to park on the street. He was starting to lose patience with this intruder. But how could he work things out?
He Decided To Balance The Books
Since he paid more rent than anyone else in the building, he wondered if he should ask the roommate to pay a nominal fee for the use of his spot. After all, he was paying for it, but she was the one using it. Alternatively, he thought about gifting it to somebody who worked nearby. Still, he felt bad about kicking the roommate out.
He Didn’t Want To Be Greedy
His salary more than paid for his living expenses, and it wasn’t as though he needed the extra cash. He also understood that times were tough for everybody and that the roommate might not be able to afford any parking fees. But he felt that she should pay on principle.
Was He Wrong To Want Cash?
He couldn’t decide whether to confront his neighbor’s roommate or not. In fact, he worried that he was being the bad person in the situation. Should he be the bigger person and let her park for free? Or should he assert his right to his spots?
One person said, “You are paying for these spots. Give someone an inch, and they’ll take a mile.”
Another Person Agreed
“You have let them use it for free for a while and were told it was a short-term thing. They are still using the spot and being inconsiderate and using BOTH spots, which to me ends any goodwill you need to have.”
