A Man Was Told That He Wouldn’t have to Work Late or on Weekends, but His Boss Kept Ringing Him on Weekends to Come into Work, so He Refused

An individual had secured a new salaried job, one which showed potential to bring a lot of benefits to their life. However, the healthy work-life balance presented to them in the interview soon turned out to be a lie. Here is what he had to say:

Accepting the Job

When the individual secured their new job, they were enticed by promises of a robust work-life balance and reasonable hours, both of which were heavily emphasized during the job interview. The picture painted was that of a workplace where the expectation to stay late or work on weekends and holidays was a rare occurrence.

Intrusion From the Boss

However, the reality didn’t align with those assurances. The person explained: “My boss got my personal phone number off my resume from when I applied and after not long he was blowing up my phone on nights and weekends asking me to come to work.”

Evading the Calls

In an attempt to shield themselves from this intrusion, the individual chose not to respond to these intrusive calls. When confronted on Monday about their apparent unavailability, they employed a clever tactic by presenting their work phone.

A Clever Tactic

Feigning innocence, the person claimed that their personal cell phone was seldom used. The man wrote, “I told him that if he needs to reach me he should try my work phone because I’m very careful to follow up on any call to that within 1 business day.”

Proposing an Alternative

When their boss asked how to reach them beyond the usual 9-to-5 window, the person offered a sensible alternative. They recommended that their boss schedule calls as formal meetings, entering them into their calendar.

Boss’s Rejection

Regrettably, the boss dismissed this proposal as unworkable. He argued that many calls were impromptu and unplanned, and the work often involved people coming in immediately. The formality of meetings and calendars didn’t align with these demands.

Weekend Commitments

The individual expressed how they often scheduled weeks in advance. They emphasized the necessity of a minimum three-week notice period to accommodate any work requests during weekends, ensuring no conflicts with their personal obligations.

Seeking a Compromise

The boss, however, found this timeline unfeasible and pressed for a solution. In an attempt to find common ground, the individual conceded to answering the phone if they heard it ringing over the weekend. Nonetheless, they stressed that they weren’t tethered to their phone and might not always be readily available.

Co-worker Frustration

Despite their efforts to maintain a work-life balance, the individual’s co-workers grew increasingly frustrated. They contended that working on weekends was an integral part of the job and accused the individual of not carrying their fair share of the workload.

In response, the individual steadfastly defended their stance. They reminded their co-workers of the importance of finding a work-life balance, feeling that they shouldn’t be such pushovers. On the other hand, their stubbornness was clearly causing tensions, so they feared that they were taking their liberties too far.

Searching for Opinions

The individual headed to the internet for advice, posting their story on a popular online forum. Almost everyone took their side: “If it’s a genuine issue for the business then they need to find a fair way of scheduling time on weekends and compensating people for that”, one person responded, “Not asking you to work last-minute for no extra pay.”

Colleagues are Jealous

Other commenters chimed in that the individual was in the right to start their ground. “Your co-workers are just upset you had the guts to say no to a bad organization”, they claimed. “Weekends and overtime should be utilized as catch-up time if needed; if an organization cannot survive without this time then something needs to change in the organization.”

Prepare for the Worst

Other readers had frank advice for the person: “You’re not in the wrong, but prepare to be fired soon. Your boss is going to be looking for any reason to get you in trouble, and if you are on probation expect to be let go. It sucks but that’s the way these company boot lickers work. Good on you for standing your ground and shame on the company for lying to you about the job”.

A 56-year-old father was happy to pay for his daughter’s wedding until she refused to invite two out of four siblings. His daughter said her soon-to-be in-laws were from a traditional country and would feel uncomfortable around anyone in a gay/ queer marriage. So she excluded her siblings, Alex and Tom, because they were both married to men, and one identified as non-binary.
