A man lived on a street that had a chaotic ‘free-for-all’ parking system. Despite this, he rarely had trouble finding a spot in front of his house, but this all changed one day when a semi-truck started abusing the use of the parking space.
Permit-Only Parking
The street parking was signposted as permit-only parking, yet to the man’s knowledge, no one in the neighborhood possessed such permits. When the man questioned his landlord about this, a nonchalant response indicated that it was of little consequence, as no one paid attention to the restriction.
A Chaotic System
Despite the chaotic system, the man didn’t face too many problems. He usually had access to a parking spot right outside his house, until one day when a semi-truck ensured this would no longer be possible.
The Unwelcome Guest
“Sometimes the semi-truck is loaded with a container, but usually it’s just his cab and a trailer, or he will detach the cab, drive it somewhere else, and just dump the trailer,” the man explained. “I saw him get out of his truck once, walk down the street, and go inside his own home, which had nothing parked in front of it.”
Inconvenient Consequences
The man’s tolerance for the semi-truck was limited because it not only disrupted him but also customers who frequented the neighborhood’s restaurants and shops. The truck’s lengthy stays rendered parking impossible for days at a time, leading to frustration among neighbors.
Obstructing the Trash-Men
The tipping point occurred when one day, the semi-truck obstructed trash collection on the designated trash day. The man, adhering to city rules allowing only two trash bags per residence, had to purchase additional bag tags to address the mounting waste.
Taking Matters into His Own Hands
Fed up with the persistent inconvenience, the man decided to take action. “I wrote a note asking him to not leave his truck in front of our house because our trash wasn’t collected and it’s a nuisance,” he explained.
The Ongoing Battle
Despite his communication, the truck continued to occupy the parking spot, leading to another missed trash pickup. Frustrated and determined to regain his parking space, the man started parking his own vehicle strategically, blocking the truck in. He parked close enough to ensure the truck owner would need to maneuver to exit.
The Driver’s Response
Soon after, the semi-truck owner left a note in response. “Hi, please allow me enough space to get into my truck,” it wrote. “You park closely every day. I don’t wanna tow your car out of the way. Please + thanks, your neighbor.”
His Anger
The man couldn’t believe the driver’s audacity. “I know he has no legal recourse to have my car towed, so I’m not worried about that,” he remarked. “However, I’m still pretty peeved that he would threaten me with it.”
A Moral Dilemma
Contemplating his next move, the man considered responding with a note suggesting alternative parking options for the truck owner. However, he grappled with the question of whether he was justified in his actions or if he was in fact the one in the wrong.
Asking the Net
The man decided to seek advice from the internet, posting his story on a question-and-answer website. “Check your bylaws about commercial vehicles parked in a residential neighborhood,” one reader suggested. “You can’t just dump a trailer on the street in most places.”
Keep Blocking Him
Some people suggested the man simply kept doing what he was doing. “It might be legal for him to park down the street from his house, but it sure is unethical to do it all the time,” one person commented. “You left him a note asking him to not park there and he’s ignored your note, so I’d ignore his note and keep blocking him in.”
Don’t Take Him Seriously
Everyone defended the man and encouraged him to not feel threatened by the driver. “I’m pretty certain that his threat to get your car towed is a bluff,” suggested another commenter. “I highly doubt he can legally do that, so don’t worry and keep doing what you’re doing. Hopefully, the inconvenience will eventually lead to him finding another spot.”
