Recently, his wife adopted a different approach that upset their son. When addressing him, she would use an excessively enthusiastic voice, clapping her hands and making exaggerated facial expressions.
For instance, she would say, “How was school today? Tell me all about it! Speak LOUDLY and with ENTHUSIASM!” This behavior made their son uncomfortable and embarrassed.
He Spoke To His Wife
The man attempted to privately discuss the issue with his wife, but she failed to understand his perspective. She believed her approach was the “right” way and that their son needed to become more outgoing.
They Had A Family Dinner
Then, during a Christmas celebration at his sister-in-law’s house, his son asked the man to pass the gravy.
His Wife Used Her Technique
In response, his wife, using her usual enthusiastic tone, encouraged their son to ask for the gravy with enthusiasm. This time, the man reached his breaking point.
He Stood Up For His Son
He felt it was one thing to do this privately but found it unacceptable in front of their family. He took his son and left for the movies, leaving his wife with the other family members.
They Argued
Upon their return, the wife confronted the man, criticizing him for causing a scene. She said she felt embarrassed and claimed that he had crossed a line. The father explained that he was tired of his wife trying to alter their son’s personality and believed it was a good time to make a point.
