The woman described her husband’s gift-giving: “He usually sends me breakfast because I can’t have breakfast early in the morning. He also often sends me a rose and a coffee with a note wishing me a good day, or just a note telling me that he loves me. Sometimes he even sends me chocolates or food from my favorite restaurant, etc, I love it.”

One day, one of the woman’s co-workers took issue with the daily gifts. “She said I should tell him to stop, and that it’s not appropriate to send daily gifts to my workplace”, she explained.

Despite the benign nature of the gifts, the co-worker threatened to report the woman to her boss. “She said she would tell him that she feels uncomfortable with the gift-giving and that I’m not being professional enough”, she recounted. “She even threatened to request another office-mate.”

The woman failed to understand how her co-worker could claim that her husband’s gifts were disruptive. She pointed out that her husband never brought gifts in person, so it wasn’t as if he was present in the office to distract her or her colleagues.
