A teenage boy had grown up in a religious family, but despite this, he held firm atheist views. Unfortunately, the boy’s parents did not respect his beliefs, something that would soon leave him at the end of his tether.
Forced Religion
The boy explained that despite years of explaining his disbelief in Christianity, his parents still showed him zero respect. “I’ve told them countless times that I don’t believe in god, yet they still try to force Christianity on me”, he explained.
Disciplining Him
Instead of accepting his atheism, the parents attempted to make the boy believe through discipline. “Since I refuse to go to church, they usually ground me or take my phone away, neither of which bothers me in the least”, he continued.
Unwelcome Visit From the Pastor
One day, the boy’s parents stepped things up a notch. Upon returning home from school, he discovered a pastor from his parents’ church in their living room. This unexpected presence ignited feelings of anger and resentment as his mother once again explained she was staging an intervention.
Religious Intervention
The mother insisted that the teenager sit and listen to the pastor’s message, hoping it would lead him to the “light of God” and free him from “Satan’s chains.” However, the teenager firmly refused: “I refused and screamed at her, telling her what a terrible parent she is and asking why she keeps doing this to me.”
A Stormy Retreat
In response to his outburst, the mother labeled her son as the “devil’s child” to the visiting pastor. Frustrated and hurt, the teenager stormed to his room, slamming the door shut, hoping his message was clear.
Morning Confrontation
The following morning, the boy’s mother approached him for a conversation. The teenager, however, was only interested in an apology. The mother dismissed the request, leading to another heated exchange.
Threats and Tears
The teenager raised his voice again and began to storm out, whilst his mother threatened to send him to a Christian boarding school. This threat further fueled the teenager’s anger. He lashed out, expressing his disdain for his mother’s beliefs and vowing never to speak to her again if she followed through with this plan.
Grandparents’ Disapproval
When the teenager’s grandparents arrived to pick him up from school, they too expressed disappointment in his actions, insisting he apologize to his mother. They supported the idea of sending him to the Christian boarding school, believing it would be beneficial.
Continued Abuse
Unfortunately, the abuse the boy received from his parents soon escalated from verbal to physical. “Recently I was unwell and needed medical assistance”, the boy recounted. “I begged my mother to take me to the doctor, but she declined, claiming that not believing in god was ‘my choice’, just as it was ‘her choice’ to refuse.”
Left in Disbelief
The teenager could not believe the way he was being treated. He felt that his parents should respect his atheist beliefs, and couldn’t understand how they thought their abusive treatment would change his views. He expressed regret at screaming at his mother but felt that he had been left with no other choice.
Venting Online
The boy headed to his favorite social media platform, telling his story in the hope of support from readers. Thankfully, this is exactly what he received. “Wow… can you talk to a school counselor?”, asked one reader. “Seems like this is bordering on child abuse.”
Neglectful Mother
Many people claimed that the boy’s mother was being a neglectful parent. “You’ve done nothing wrong, and refusing you medical assistance when you are sick is neglect”, one person stated. “She has a legal obligation to care for you when you are sick.”
Only 2 Years Left
Despite everyone taking the boy’s side, some people suggested he should grit his teeth. “You have two years before you can legally leave home, so choose your battles”, suggested another commenter. “Sitting through church services may be the price you need to pay to keep yourself physically safe for two years while you make an exit plan for moving out as soon as you can.”
