A man moved to Brooklyn with his girlfriend after living in New Hampshire. They sought somewhere new and different but were soon disappointed when they realized they were far away from their ideal neighborhood.
They Were Frustrated
The man said, ‘It’s still a great place, but we are kind of far removed from the parts we wanted to move to (Williamsburg, Park Slope, etc.), which is frustrating.’
There Was a Large Crowd Outside Their Home
One weekend, at around 6 pm, the couple was surprised to find a large group of people listening to music outside their home. They didn’t think much of it until the group, which ranged from about 20 people, grew to 50.
It Was a Party
The music grew increasingly loud, and smoke billowed everywhere due to the use of 3 grills. Everyone was drinking openly, and children were playing in the street. The couple soon became annoyed, especially by the smell of meat wafting into their vegan household.
It Was a Nightmare
Despite their desire for fresh air, they tried shutting the windows, but the sound and the smell still permeated their home. The man was particularly upset; this wasn’t what he signed up for. He spoke to one of the party-goers, and they explained that block parties like this happened often in the neighborhood. When he asked them to quiet down, they looked at him in confusion.
They Refused to Help
The man felt he was treated poorly by the party-goer, who suggested that he had no right to complain, seeing as he and his girlfriend were new to the neighborhood. They said the party usually died down between 10–11 p.m., and the couple would have to deal with it.
It Was Totally Illegal
Many of the guests were drinking publicly, which upset the man, seeing as it was illegal. Even more frustrating were the children dangerously playing soccer in the street. But the most enraging thing was when the party-goer he spoke to pointed to a group of people in their 20s and said something controversial.
They Were An Annoying White Couple
The man said, ‘The people I was talking to then pointed at another group of people at the block party and jokingly said, “Look! They’re having fun, they moved here just like you!’
They Suggested He Stop Having a Problem with The Party
The man was immediately offended. The people the party-goers were pointing at were white, like himself. They suggested that the man should just try and have fun and stop having a problem with the party. The man couldn’t believe it. When 10 pm rolled around, the party hadn’t stopped, and the man smelled the strong scent of marijuana.
He Called the Police
His girlfriend suggested that they call the police and put an end to the public nuisance. He was reluctant at first, afraid that his neighbors would get arrested, but agreed moments later. When the cops showed up, the guests were yelling about how ridiculous it was.
His Brother Made Him Feel Guilty
The man told his brother about his awful weekend, and he was surprised at his response. His brother claimed that he and his girlfriend were ‘out of line’ which he felt was unfair, as they lived comfortably in a suburban neighborhood. He asked the internet what they thought.
