Her husband, who was 34, worked full-time while she stayed home with their 5 kids. At the end of the day, they were both exhausted. Unfortunately, they couldn’t afford a nanny or to take time off.

They lived frugally in a three-bedroom townhouse and were very careful with money. They had a big family, a mortgage, and student loans to pay off. But, because of this, their kids knew the value of chores from a young age.

The woman didn’t own a dishwasher, so her kids took turns to do the dishes. One Sunday, it was her 9-year-old daughter’s turn, but she kept getting distracted by her siblings. The water made her hands itch, and she wanted to play with her brothers and sisters outside.

She Kept Complaining

Of course, the woman’s daughter didn’t get the dishes done, so she said she would have to do them the next day. But days passed… her daughter never did the dishes. Instead, she watched TV and played with her siblings. The dishes started piling up, and the 9-year-old started complaining that there were too many.

They Still Weren’t Done

She told her daughter that she had to do all the dishes as a punishment for putting it off. But when Wednesday morning rolled around, they were still dirty, and the woman threatened her daughter.

If the dishes weren’t done by the next day, before bedtime, she was going to cancel her daughter’s birthday party. At first, her daughter got mad and cried, and then decided that she didn’t believe her mother. She washed a couple of things and then went outside to play. Thursday came, and the woman decided to follow through on her threat.

The party was canceled! When her daughter found out, she threw a tantrum and claimed that it was unfair because she was only turning ten once. The woman told all the parents not to bring their kids over on Saturday, and instead, she made a cake for her daughter and cooked her her favorite meal. But her daughter was outraged and started picking fights with her siblings.

It Wasn’t Fair

The woman said, ‘She called her aunt (my sister) on the family landline, and my sister said that I was too harsh and I’ve traumatized my daughter.’

Her daughter continued having tantrums and screamed at her sisters when they entered their shared bedroom. Her husband said that it was a good thing, and although she wasn’t doing her chores now, she had learned a valuable lesson. The woman wondered whether her sister was right and if she had been too harsh. She asked the internet for advice.

One person said, ‘Chores are a great way to teach kids responsibility and self-sufficiency, but this seems a bit much.’

Others Had Thoughts

Another commented, ‘Cancelling a party for not doing dishes is a disproportionate punishment!!’

A final reader criticized the woman, ‘It’s not your daughter’s fault that you have had more kids than you can handle.’

A 56-year-old father was happy to pay for his daughter’s wedding until she refused to invite two out of four siblings. His daughter said her soon-to-be in-laws were from a traditional country and would feel uncomfortable around anyone in a gay/ queer marriage. So she excluded her siblings, Alex and Tom, because they were both married to men, and one identified as non-binary.
