Sarah, a new tenant in an apartment complex, faces a conflict with her neighbor, who is the assistant to the property manager and is causing noise disturbance, leading her to confront the neighbor.
A Friendly Start
When Sarah moved into an apartment complex in September, she was greeted by a friendly neighbor named Maria who introduced herself and offered to help with any issues or repairs.
Mail Was Being Taken
However, Sarah soon discovered that Maria’s constant knocking on neighbors’ doors and taking mail from mailboxes was a regular occurrence, and she would often talk for long periods of time about nothing important.
She Was Accused
Despite this, Sarah and her partner always contacted the landlord for any issues, and he was able to resolve them until her partner broke the washing machine. They contacted the landlord, but he didn’t answer, and Maria started rampaging around the building, accusing them of breaking the washing machine without telling her.
She Was Raging
Sarah went to the basement to confront Maria, who was raging and calling them names. Sarah told her they had already contacted the landlord, and Maria should keep it down.
She Became Noisy
From then on, Maria made a point to be very loud in the halls, knocking on neighbors’ doors and talking loudly for long periods of time. She even played with a toddler and a dog in the hallways on weekends.
She Yelled at Them
Although Sarah and her partner didn’t say anything because no one else seemed to mind, they eventually had enough when someone else told Maria to be quiet, and she yelled at them. Sarah went to tell her to keep the noise down, but Maria told her she was being rude and that she was the property manager. Sarah was confused about her role and texted the landlord to clarify.
She Felt Disrespected
The landlord responded and said that he was the property manager, but Maria was an assistant who helped out in many ways around the building. He acknowledged that Maria was chatty, but she had a great heart. Sarah understood that Maria had probably dealt with the landlord not answering her calls in the past and just wanted to feel in control, but the woman also felt disrespected.
Straight to the Internet
Sarah wished she had said something to Maria earlier because she now felt that Maria hated them, and it was making their living situation hell. Stuck feeling this way Sarah decided to go to the internet and ask for feedback from a popular internet forum.
The Internet Responds
One person says, “Self imposed authority in no way constitutes actual authority. You, as the tenant, involved the landlord in matters concerning them. This lady has no right to “run the show” or interfere in your private affairs, sounds like a superiority complex. Keep doing what you’re doing.”
A Further Response
Another person wrote, “I second moving because the landlord clearly isn’t going to stop this. I have a version of this but instead of being helpful they mace women and children and one child screams for days on end. The landlord cannot evict the screamer because of the pandemic but he waited for her to destroy HIS property before trying. I would move if there was somewhere to go. Legit. No way out. The one who assaults people has full landlord support because my landlord sucks. You’re allowed to not be nice.”
A Final Comment
A third person posted, “Might want to let your landlord know about this if he’s telling you to consider her on-site management. If you’re in the US this is a felony and one the USPS takes seriously when reported. If she is his on-site management then he could end up having to explain why his agent is committing crimes in the course of her “duties” and if she is not his on-site management he needs to make that clear. A gray area about who is his “agent” when dealing with his tenants is asking for trouble.”
