A Woman Had Created a Beautiful Garden, so When Her Landlord Decided to Sell up She Took Everything with Her, but Now They Can’t Sell the House

A 25-year-old woman had been renting a house for seven years and had transformed her once-barren backyard into a lush and vibrant garden paradise. However, the time arrived when she would be ordered to move out, but her landlord was not prepared for what this meant for the garden.

The woman had added various structures to her garden over the years such as a shed, greenhouse, and even a pizza oven. Over time, she had nurtured the space into a green oasis where friends often gathered.

One day, the woman’s landlords dropped a bombshell – they intended to sell the house, and her move-out date was just a week away. 

Leaving Her Garden

The woman was willing to part with the property, but she was far more upset about the heart-breaking prospect of leaving behind her beloved garden. She had painstakingly improved it over the years and was reluctant to leave it behind for other tenants to enjoy.

Determined not to abandon her cherished garden, the woman devised a plan. “Nothing in my backyard was directly placed into the ground, and nothing was permanent”, she explained. This meant that everything could be transported to her new property.

“I dismantled the sheds and greenhouse, loaded up all the pots and garden beds onto a truck, and cleared the backyard in three days with lots of help”, the woman recounted. This now meant that she could reinstall her garden in the new property that she planned to rent. 

Landlord’s Furious Reaction

However, when the former landlords saw the barren backyard, they were livid. “They demanded that I return the backyard to the former state”, the woman wrote. “Apparently they’d listed the house for sale with pictures of the backyard, and potential buyers were walking away from the house when they saw it barren.”

Legal Standing

Legally, the woman was in the clear. Her rental contract allowed gardening, and she had photographic evidence from the initial real estate walkthrough that showed the backyard’s original state. Moreover, the final inspection had been approved by the same real estate agent, and she had received her deposit back.

Mixed Responses

Despite her legal standing, she faced criticism from friends. Some co-workers suggested that she might be in the wrong because the house’s value had significantly dropped due to her taking the garden with her. They argued that she should have informed the landlords about her intentions, allowing them to plan for landscaping before the sale.

However, the woman completely disagreed. She believed the landlord had messed up badly by listing the property with pictures of her garden, especially considering the photos had been taken without her consent.

The woman vented her frustrations online, sharing her story with friends on the internet. To her relief, the community had her back. “This is a classic story of a landlord trying to benefit from home improvements paid for by the tenant”, stated one reader. “If your landlord was honest, he would have asked you how much you wanted to leave the garden as it was.”

The Landlord Had Options

One commenter highlighted that the landlord could still restore the garden to its former glory. “If the owners want the garden looking nice, they can pay up and put in the effort themselves”, they wrote. “Their house value is not your responsibility and any decent landlord will put money into a property after a long-term tenant has been there.”

Seeing the Landlord’s Perspective

Everyone defended the woman, but some commenters empathized with the landlord. “I can kinda see how they have presumed that the garden was staying”, someone claimed. “Because it’s looked so green for so long, they might have forgotten the state of the backyard beforehand. That said, it’s not your problem, as you literally own everything you took with you.”
