For nearly a decade, a 30-year-old woman had been living next to an elderly couple who, from time to time, had been the source of various inconveniences. The central issue at hand had been their dilapidated fence, a problem that has been brewing for years.
The Decaying Fence
The fence in question was a relic of the past, aged around least 30 to 40 years. “It was already in a bad state when I moved into the neighborhood”, the woman explained.
Supported by the Carport
The woman explained that the only thing holding up the fence was her carport: “The wood is rotted, missing several pickets, and provides no support. The entire thing would collapse if there weren’t various buildings and large objects around for it to lean on, including my carport.”
Fruitless Conversations
The woman had initiated multiple conversations with her neighbors about the fence. However, her attempts were met with resistance from the neighbors, who believed the fence was perfectly fine and accused her of trying to manipulate them into footing the bill for a new fence.
Carport’s Demise
The woman soon decided to remove her carport, and a pivotal moment arrived. Shortly thereafter, a gusty wind swept through the neighborhood, causing the fence to crumble.
Blame Game Begins
Instead of acknowledging the fence’s dire need for replacement due to years of neglect, the elderly couple pointed fingers at the woman. “They claimed that the workers who removed my carport damaged their fence in the process, making it structurally unstable which caused it to collapse”, she explained.
Demands to Pay
The neighbors were completely uncompromising. “After arguing about how many times I warned them this would happen, they told me I had to pay for a new fence or they would sue”, the woman recounted. “I refused and wished them luck getting it removed or replaced.”
Documenting the Fence
Part of the reason the woman had no fear in the face of a potential lawsuit was the fact that she had evidence supporting her innocence. She had various before and after photographs of the fence in question which showed its decrepit state, and knew that this would help her fight her case if the neighbors acted on their threats.
Sister-in-Law’s Perspective
Bizarrely, the woman’s sister-in-law believed that the woman bore some responsibility for the situation due to her carport removal. She felt that she should have offered to cover at least half of the costs.
Her Perspective
The woman, however, refused to take any blame for the collapsed fence. She maintained that the neighbors had ample time to address the fence’s issues but had consistently denied its need for repairs.
Seeking Advice
The woman headed online with her neighborly frustrations, asking her internet friends what they thought she should do. Thankfully, she had their full support. “Their fence, their responsibility, period”, stated one particularly concise comment.
They Had No Case
Not only did everyone agree that the woman had done nothing wrong, but many people reassured her that a lawsuit was unlikely. “Your sister-in-law is a moron, only slightly less so than your neighbors”, one commenter humorously wrote. “Your neighbors are mad because now they have to do something about the fence. The threat of a lawsuit is idle, don’t worry.”
Ridiculed Sister-in-Law
Many comments were flooding in to ridicule the woman’s sister-in-law. “Your sister-in-law is ridiculous to think you owed your neighbors a structure to lean their fence on”, another reader stated.
Would Have Been Cheap
One DIY enthusiast found humor in the fact that if this had been addressed when the woman brought it up, it would have been a cheap fix. “Lol, to be honest, they could have used Star pickets as a temporary solution while they couldn’t replace the fence properly”, they laughed. “They legit comparatively cost nothing.”
