A woman headed out in her car one day with her two young children and had to get gas on the way. However, during her gas station pit stop, the woman’s parking decisions would unexpectedly change her mood for the day.
Her Vehicle Choice
The woman needed a family vehicle that could accommodate family trips, such as hiking, camping, and mountain drives. She opted for an SUV with regular hinge doors instead of a minivan.
However, the woman’s SUV did come with one inconvenience. She often had to open the car doors widely to reach her kids’ car seats, an action that could prove difficult when parked in tight spots.
Parking Near Others
To combat this problem, the woman always tried to park her SUV in a way that left ample space on both sides. However, in crowded areas, parking beside other vehicles became unavoidable.
A Controversial Solution
The woman explained her controversial solution to this problem: “If the door has to touch the car next to me, I rest it as gently as possible to make sure it doesn’t cause damage. I know some people are really protective of their cars and I try to be sensitive to that.”
An Encounter at the Gas Station
One day, the woman made a pit stop at a busy gas station. Unfortunately, she had no choice but to park next to another car. The driver of the adjacent silver sedan was inside, occupied with his phone.
A Frustrating Request
When the woman returned to her car, the sedan next to her was still occupied by the man. Frustratingly, this left her with no space to get her children buckled into their seats, so she reluctantly had to rest her car door gently on the sedan.
To the woman’s dismay, this action immediately caused an altercation. “The guy gets out and says ‘Can you not slam into my car?’”, she recounted. “I say “I’m sorry it touched but there are no marks”, to which he replied, “That’s not the point.”
The woman’s frustration grew as she struggled to buckle her toddler in while avoiding any contact between her door and the sedan. “I’m doing my best, but this is a busy parking lot,” the woman reminded the man. “People are going to be coming and going and stuff might touch your car.”
Finding a Solution
The man responded by staring angrily at the woman. She eventually found a solution, albeit an uncomfortable one. “I asked my daughter to try to buckle herself in while holding the car door so it doesn’t touch his anymore,” she recounted. “I managed to contort, stretch, and slide into the driver’s seat, but it wasn’t a pleasant experience.”
The altercation was now over, but the woman was left frustrated. She wondered why the man chose to sit in his car idly in such a busy spot when there were ample alternatives. She also felt that he was being unrealistic to expect people to never touch his car with their door, believing it to be inevitable.
Was She in the Wrong?
Upon arriving home, the woman’s conscience was at war, so she headed online, asking internet dwellers for their verdict. However, the jury did not prove her innocent. “You said it yourself – you got your daughter buckled into the car without touching his car again, so you didn’t need to touch his car after all,” one reader accused.
Other readers pointed out that this situation was a direct result of the woman’s parking decisions. “There are multiple variables here within your control, such as the size of your vehicle and where you choose to park,” one person pointed out. “I don’t know which or how many of those you need to tweak, but figure it out. It’s not OK to be making contact with other vehicles.”
A D.I.Y Solution
One commenter chimed in with a smart, albeit somewhat unconventional, solution. “Make a door bumper out of a piece of pool noodle for these types of occasions,” they wrote. “It’s cheap, effective, and considerate – there’s no excuse not to.”
