A woman went to go and visit family who lived 3,000 miles away, but they didn’t tell her they had other people staying and she would have to sleep on an air mattress. Her complaints caused family drama. Here’s what the woman had to say:
She Went To Visit Family
“I live 3,000 miles away from my brother and sister-in-law. Because we live so far apart, we know far in advance when we will visit one another. I booked this visit in August and everyone knew I was coming. They have two spare bedrooms.”
They Had Last Minute Company
A few days before her arrival, a winter storm hit her sister-in-law’s hometown, causing a power outage. As a result, her sister-in-law’s parents came to stay in one of the spare bedrooms. She didn’t mind this since there were two spare bedrooms available.
They Didn’t Tell Her About The Change Of Plans
However, when she arrived after a long day of travel, she learned that her sister-in-law’s aunt was also staying in the other spare bedroom. Instead, she was given a loft area with a blow-up bed.
They Had Other Places To Stay
The woman explained, “I was furious but played it cool because the aunt is elderly and a very nice lady.” Her sister-in-law’s extended family is quite large, so had lots of other accommodation options for where she could stay. On the other hand, the woman only had one place to stay. Her sister-in-law’s sister, for example, has a house with several spare bedrooms.
She Decided To Stay Elsewhere
Politely and without causing a scene, she said she was going to stay in a hotel for the first couple of days. She felt extremely angry that her brother and sister-in-law knew about her visit for six months and failed to mention that she would be given a blow-up mattress in the loft. If they had informed her, she could have made alternate arrangements in advance.
They Were Angry At Her
But her brother and mother then called her a jerk for leaving only two minutes after her arrival and making the aunt and parents feel bad. She understood that the sleeping arrangement was an unfortunate consequence of the storm and that they needed a place to stay.
But She Thought They Weren’t Considering Her Needs
However, she was upset because her brother and sister-in-law had other options but apparently didn’t inform her family about her visit or let her know that both bedrooms were already occupied. She felt they hadn’t thought about her needs and had prioritized other family members.
Was The Woman In The Wrong?
The woman acknowledged that this wasn’t a significant issue in the grand scheme of things, but she felt frustrated and alone in a hotel room, seething with anger. Her mother, who is not directly involved, believes she was rude to the elderly aunt during her time of need. But the woman was clear that she didn’t confront anyone; she simply chose to leave.
