A woman recently asked for advice about a standoff over a seat on a bus. The last bus was full, but was she right to keep her seat when an entitled passenger demanded it? Here’s what she had to say:
The Woman Had A New Job
“I’ve just started a new job, and I was on a night shift that finished at 23:00. I checked the bus times beforehand and saw that the last bus home is at 23:30.”
There Was A Queue For The Bus
Despite the late hour, plenty of other people wanted to catch the same bus as the woman. There were already a couple of people at the bus stop when the woman arrived, and even more would-be passengers were about to turn up.
The Bus Arrived
At last, the bus arrived. However, the woman became concerned when she noticed that the bus was nearly full. Passengers were packed in like sardines. Would everyone be able to fit aboard?
The Driver Laid Down The Law
The driver announced that there was only room for three more people. That was a problem, as there were currently five people waiting at the bus stop: two people, the woman, and a mother and child. Things were about to get ugly.
Who Would Fit Aboard?
“The two girls board, and the woman with the child asks me if she can take my place because her child is cold, hungry, and tired,” the woman explained. But the mother’s pleas weren’t going to get her to miss the last bus home.
The Woman Resisted
Although the woman understood that the mother and her child were in a difficult situation, it would take more than that for her to give up her seat on the bus. She apologized and told the mother that she had to get the bus as it was too far to walk home.
The Mother Fought Back
The mother’s demands grew more explicit. She urged the woman to give up her seat. If she didn’t, then mother and child would struggle to get home. There was no other way to travel.
The Woman Made Her Choice
Again, the woman apologized for denying the mother and child a spot on the bus. She understood their frustration at having to find another way home, but she made it clear that she couldn’t get home without the bus herself. She had to put herself first.
The Mother Reacted Badly
The mother was clearly shocked to not be given a space on the last bus. She started to weep, and, although the woman had tried to apologize, the mother attacked her. She called her names and implied that she was in the wrong. How could she strand a young child by the side of the road?
Was She Wrong?
The woman wondered if she’d been selfish. The child’s mother had suggested as much—what if she had been right? But, then again, would there have even been space on the bus for both mother and child? The question of whether she should have given up her seat began to weigh heavy on her mind.
People Reassured The Woman
One person said, “It does really suck for the mother. but having a child does not automatically give her special privileges. I am a mother to three kids, and, while I would be upset if I were on the receiving end, that doesn’t give me any special approval to cut in line.”
Another Person Had This to Say
“Driver also said three people. Two already on board. She didn’t fit.”
Another Commenter Said
“NTA you were there first. If giving up your spot on the bus meant having to walk home, then sorry but not sorry. Im not walking.”
