A Woman Was Heartbroken when Her Husband Decided to Attend a Baseball Game Rather than Celebrate Her Recovery from A Serious Car Crash Injury that He Caused

Jane’s plans to celebrate her recovery with a 10k race and a weekend trip with her partner and friends are derailed when her partner prioritizes a work event over the celebration. Here is what she had to say:

A Car Accident

For four years, Jane had been in a relationship with Paul. A year ago, they were in a car accident, and Paul was driving and 100% at fault. While Paul was unharmed, Jane had broken her back and had to wear a back brace for months. After she was out of the brace, she started going to the gym and running, and she was now in the best shape of her life.

A month ago, Jane found out that there was a 10k race on the 1-year anniversary of the accident in a mountain town about 3 hours away. She suggested the idea to Paul, her 2 best friends, and their partners, and everyone was on board.

However, a few days before the trip, Paul told Jane that his bosses wanted him to be in San Francisco on Sunday for a Giants game and that he could no longer come on the trip.

Jane was hurt and upset by Paul’s decision and tried to convince him to come on the trip or at least join on Friday and drive back late Saturday or early Sunday to catch his flight.

He Refused

However, Paul refused, saying it would be too much of a hassle and that he didn’t want to backtrack on his agreement with his bosses. Jane was hurt by Paul’s decision and let him know how she felt.

She Rejected Him

On the morning of the trip, Paul tried to be affectionate towards Jane, but she was still upset, and she rejected all his attempts at affection. Paul became upset with Jane, saying that she was ruining their last day together and pressuring him to skip his work event.

Jane felt that Paul was being selfish and prioritizing a baseball game over celebrating her recovery. Jane decided to look for answers from a popular online forum.

The Internet Responds

One person had a spiteful opinion, saying, “Not the jerk on the initial part, but then you said “especially considering he’s the one that caused my injury in the 1st place” – that sounds really, really nasty. Guilt tripping him for the rest of your lives together won’t be good emotionally. Is the whole celebration of your progress a moment to rub his nose in the fact “he caused it”? Good luck.”

A Second Responds

Another person writes, “She had the right to feel resentment, whether unconscious or otherwise, but it’s not always intentional or obvious. But think of it the other way. He surely knows he was 100% at fault but would blow her off for a baseball game? Could be a few things going on here – either he’s an utter jerk, he’s concerned about getting ahead in his new job so he he can support her in need, or he feels so much guilt that he finds it hard to deal with. Regardless, these are all his problems and he should be supporting her rather than running away.”

A Third Responds

A third person comments, “It also feels like her resentment is stemming from his unwillingness to put a small amount of extra effort into showing up for something incredibly important to her that was planned well in advance of his sudden baseball game. He also made this unilateral decision to change their plans, miss her milestone moment, and celebrate her recovery entirely on his own without consulting her or considering her feelings or needs in this moment. Personally, if I found out that one of my new employees prioritized a baseball game above the recovery of his partner, especially if there was opportunity for them to still show up but didn’t out of pure laziness, I’d be incredibly disappointed and likely see that employee differently.”

A 56-year-old father was happy to pay for his daughter’s wedding until she refused to invite two out of four siblings. His daughter said her soon-to-be in-laws were from a traditional country and would feel uncomfortable around anyone in a gay/ queer marriage. So she excluded her siblings, Alex and Tom, because they were both married to men, and one identified as non-binary.
