She Was Third Choice
Emily was a college student who had been invited on a vacation by her former roommate Meg, whose family was very wealthy. Emily was Meg’s third choice, as her family had vetoed the first two options. They didn’t want her bringing a boy or another female friend who they disliked.
She Was Grateful
Meg’s parents bought Emily’s plane ticket and booked the resort, which Emily was very grateful for. She had saved up a lot of money to make sure she could buy her own food and activities while there and even treat Meg’s family to a dinner as a thank you for the ticket.
Things Quickly Changed
But when the trip started, things quickly turned sour. Emily found herself on vacation with Meg, her mother, father, two of his friends, and her three brothers. On the flight, they all got first-class seats, while Emily was given an economy seat. Emily didn’t argue because she was grateful for the free ticket.
They Asked Her to Cook
However, the first night they went to a grocery store, and it turned out they wanted to cook at the resort kitchen for the whole trip. Emily soon found out that they wanted her and Meg to do all the cooking. Emily wasn’t warned about this, but it turned out that Meg’s family saw cooking as a woman’s job, and her mom had just had hand surgery.

Emily screwed up the cooking, undercooking chicken and overcooking some steak. Meg’s dad was angry with her, and Emily got short with him, telling him that if he knew how to do better, he could pitch in instead of standing around criticizing.
Things Escalated
But he got furious and said he was on his vacation. Emily replied that she was trying to have a vacation too, or did they invite her to be an unpaid domestic servant? Meg’s parents and dad’s friends got angry, and they started yelling at Emily. The argument escalated, and Emily sarcastically called herself “the help”. Meg’s dad snapped at her and told her to get out of their suite and go home. He didn’t say anything about how he expected her to do that.

Emily went sightseeing and relaxed on the beach for three days, trying to forget about what had happened. They said they thought she was going home, and Emily replied that she decided to stay.
