A 26-year-old stay-at-home mom had never got along well with her mother-in-law. However, what was initially just an inconvenience soon turned into a serious spat, leaving the mother-in-law abandoned far from home.
The Frustrating Request
The woman explained that her mother-in-law had recently been visiting frequently. “She got divorced a couple of months ago and not-so-subtly complained to my husband that she was lonely, so my husband insisted that we have her over every weekend”, she explained. “It’s been awful.”
Mother-in-Law Tensions
The woman continued to explain her disdain for her mother-in-law: “She has always made snide remarks about me being a teenage mom, but I learned to ignore it since my husband asked me to keep the peace. When she began staying over, she would make comments about how dusty the floor was, how much laundry was in the basket, etc.”
The Final Straw
However, the situation escalated when the mother-in-law criticized the woman’s daughter’s academic abilities, insinuating that she wasn’t intelligent due to her mother’s ‘lack of effort in teaching her’. This led to a heated argument, and the woman’s husband finally agreed that he would be the one to visit his mother, with no communication between the women.
School Routine
Relieved that her mother-in-law was gone, the woman got back to her normal routine. She would usually pick up her daughter from school, with her husband doing drop-offs. However, to the woman’s dismay, this otherwise pleasant pick-up experience would soon be disturbed by her mother-in-law.
Unexpected Request
One morning, a sudden request arose when the mother-in-law’s car had its catalytic converter stolen, so the woman’s husband asked her to pick up his mother from work. The workplace was relatively close to their daughter’s school, a mere 15-minute walk away, but understandably, she was reluctant.
A Defiant Stand
The woman declined, feeling that her husband should manage the situation. However, her husband secretly convinced his mother to walk to their daughter’s school with the expectation that she could catch a ride home.
A Public Confrontation
As the woman arrived at her daughter’s school, she encountered the mother-in-law and her daughter together. She approached her with caution and abruptly informed her that she would not provide her a ride home.
Driving Off
“She started causing a scene and the other parents and children were starting to stare, so I took my daughter by the hand and drove away”, the woman laughed. This left the mother-in-law abandoned at the school.
Regrets and Consequences
Later, when her husband returned home, he expressed his disappointment and anger with his wife for embarrassing his mother in front of others and leaving her without a ride home. He argued that it wouldn’t have been much effort to give her a lift this one time and expressed regret about the public spectacle created at their daughter’s school.
Her Defense
However, the woman was unapologetic. She did not feel that her mother-in-law deserved a lift after her recent actions. Furthermore, she was equally angry with her husband, who went behind her back to convince his mother to turn up at the school, without her consent.

However, the story was surprisingly controversial. “It really wouldn’t have been the end of the world if you drove her home”, criticized one reader. “You shouldn’t be so stubborn – pettiness isn’t going to fix things.”
