A Woman’s Mother Lost Everything to A MLM Scheme, so When Her Brother’s Fiancée’s Bachelorette Party Was a MLM Sales Pitch, the Woman Ruined the Night

A 28-year-old woman had experienced significant life problems due to her mother’s involvement with a multi-level marketing (MLM) scheme, which destroyed her and her brother’s college funds and plunged the family into debt. She was once again reminded of MLM’s causing her to ruin a party, here is what she had to say:

Her Mother’s MLM Problem

The woman’s problems with MLM began with her mother’s deep dive into the scheme. The mother’s actions resulted in the depletion of her daughter and son’s college funds in addition to tens of thousands of dollars of debt, all in pursuit of maintaining her MLM rank.

Up to this point, the family’s life had seemed idyllic, with the woman’s poor financial decisions and debts being kept secret.

It All Came Crashing Down

The family’s life took a nosedive when the father suffered an injury, forcing him to take time off work. The precarious house of cards her mother built through the MLM scheme came crashing down when the family began to rely on her income.

Things Got Worse

Due to the mother’s poor decisions, the parents divorced, leaving her and her children with no choice but to live in a cramped basement at their grandparents’ house.

Facing Their Reality

The son and daughter’s once-promising college funds were gone, and the prospect of shouldering student loans became a stark reality. To make ends meet, the children had to start working as young teenagers, all because of the devastation wrought by the MLM scheme.

This traumatic experience left a seething resentment in the woman’s heart towards MLM schemes. The memory of her mother’s downfall fueled her deep-seated hatred for these pyramid schemes.

The Upcoming Wedding

Fast-forward to the present, and the woman’s 33-year-old brother was preparing to marry his fiancée in just two weeks. The woman received an invitation to her future sister-in-law’s bachelorette party: “She said that she wanted a low-key night at her home, with some food, some alcohol, and some fun games”, the woman explained.

Upon arriving at the party, the woman was disturbed to see a saleswoman unveil a chest of adult toys and, to the woman’s dismay, she launched into a pitch for her MLM scheme.

The saleswoman running the MLM scheme sales pitch claimed that the woman’s future sister-in-law had agreed to host the event, and depending on the purchases made, she would receive money to contribute to her honeymoon.

The Breaking Point

Infuriated by this unexpected MLM scheme presentation, the woman made a swift decision to leave. She urged her younger cousins to do the same, but the MLM scheme enthusiast and the bride-to-be tried to prevent their departure.

Justifying Her Stance

The woman explained what happened next: “I went on a rant about MLMs, how scammy they are, and how I bet after plying them with alcohol, they will be pressured into buying stuff they didn’t want, as well as into joining this pyramid scheme.”

A Divided Reaction

Amid tears and frustration, the future sister-in-law accused the woman of ruining her bachelorette party. However, the woman remained resolute in her belief that confronting a scammer was worth any inconvenience caused. Her brother, while understanding her stance, expressed that she could have left with her cousins without entirely spoiling the night.

The Dilemma

Faced with social tensions, the woman headed online to defend her actions. She was mostly met with sympathy: “I think your sister-in-law was wrong to organize such a bizarre bachelorette, especially knowing her husband-to-be’s and your history with MLMs”, one person pointed out. “You could’ve handled it more graciously, but I understand why you didn’t.”

Highly Inconsiderate

Everyone believed the sister-in-law’s idea behind the party was inconsiderate. “Throwing an MLM event for a bachelorette party is at a minimum exploitive, if not predatory”, one commenter stated. “Doing it while inviting you, knowing your family’s history, is breathtakingly clueless. Your brother should be having a serious talk with his fiancée.”

Shouldn’t Have Caused a Scene

Everyone agreed the sister-in-law acted poorly, but not everyone defended the woman. “She turns her bachelorette party into a sales pitch… without even a heads up?”, one reader asked. “Just… no. I think it’s rude to invite people to a party and then try to make a profit from them. However, you creating a huge scene at her bachelorette party? Also a huge no.”
