Street Parking Was The Name Of The Game
“On my street, no one has a driveway or garage. So it’s all just street parking. Generally, everyone is good about just parking in front of their own houses. The unwritten rule is that if you have a second car or have guests, you should park down the road where there is a large public parking lot with plenty of parking spots.”
New Neighbors Arrived
The woman explained that a man and his son had recently moved onto the street. The man had a disability and had petitioned the council to have a handicap spot put in by his house. The woman supported this action.
The Son Was Trouble
“The son (who for some reason has a car and a truck) will park wherever he wants in front of whoever’s house. Several of us had gone to talk to the dad about it and ask if he could ask his son to be more courteous about the parking situation.”
The Son Had No Reason To Act Out
The woman stressed that the son was not disabled in any way and that he could have parked his two vehicles further down the road and walked to his dad’s house. But the woman got an unwelcome surprise when she confronted the man about his son’s parking.
The Man Didn’t See Any Issue
When the woman confronted him, the boy’s father said that his son could park wherever he wanted. It was a free country, wasn’t it? The woman found him to be very thoughtless, but there was nothing she could do about it.
Karma Came To Bite
The woman’s niece often came to babysit at her house. Because the niece also had a disability, she was entitled to use handicap spots, just like the man. One morning, she decided to park in the man’s handicap spot since it was empty.
The Man Was Shocked
The man couldn’t believe that someone else had had the audacity to park in “his” spot. He threatened to have the niece’s car towed, but the tow was turned down. Because she had the proper permit, she was entitled to park there, whether he liked it or not.
He Confronted The Woman
The neighbor demanded that the woman tell her niece never to park in the spot outside his house again. However, when the woman discussed the situation with her niece, her niece found it very funny. As far as she was concerned, the man was getting what he deserved.
The Woman Struggled To Empathazie
It was difficult for the woman to take her neighbor’s side. While she recognized that he had needed access to a handicapped space, the one outside his house was, in fact, public property. Her niece had as much of a right to use it as anybody else with the proper papers.
