A woman had been married to her husband for three years, and together they lived with the woman’s daughter and the man’s son. The woman generally got along well with her stepson, however, he would soon become the root of a significant family drama due to his heroin addiction.
The Friendly Stepson
The woman explained how her relationship with her stepson had mostly been positive: “I am friendly with my stepson, but we aren’t close. He has a biological mother who is a perfectly fine woman, I’m not here to take the role of his mom.”
The Stepson’s Heroin Addiction
However, there was one major issue that stunted the woman’s relationship with her stepson. “He’s struggling with a heroin addiction and has stolen money, jewelry, heirlooms, and electronics from us for drug money,” she lamented.
Offering Support
Thankfully, the young man was not left to struggle alone. “I understand that addiction is a disease, so I personally paid for an outpatient detox for him, which cost $1000, but failed,” she wrote. “His father then paid for an outpatient rehab program, which cost $6500, which also didn’t work because he barely showed up.”
Losing Hope
The woman explained that she was beginning to lose hope for her stepson: “He promised us he’d do better next time, and he needed another chance, so I split the cost of another $6500 outpatient rehab program with my husband, which once again failed.”
A Final Solution
As a last resort, the husband had found a $30,000 60-day inpatient rehab program, which his son was willing to try. However, the woman was concerned about this heavy price tag, especially considering her stepson’s poor track record at rehab.
The Daughter’s College Fund
However, the woman’s husband had a suggestion. The woman and her late husband had saved up $180,000 for their daughter’s college fund, money that had yet been untouched. The woman’s current husband suggested that $30,000 could be borrowed from this fund in order to pay for the stepson’s rehab.
Her Reaction
However, the woman was not happy with this request. “Firstly, I feel like it’s completely unfair to my daughter to punish her for my stepson’s addiction,” she explained. “Secondly, I just don’t think it’ll work. The past rehabs didn’t, so what makes this any different?”
Her Husband’s Criticism
Unfortunately, the woman’s husband found her response deeply offensive. He labeled her a terrible stepmother because she was, in his view, prioritizing her daughter’s education over his son’s life. Ultimately, he believed that medical needs should come first.
