After enduring her boss’ unprofessional and invasive behavior at her job, the woman asked for advice on how to handle this behavior, as well as her low pay and the fact she frequently worked overtime. Here is what the woman had to say:
She Started A New Job
The woman said, “Last October, my boyfriend and I relocated to a small city (10k population). I took a job at the local Chamber of Commerce. When I was hired, there were three other staff members, including my boss, ‘L’.”
She Worked Alone With Her Boss
However, not long after the woman started, two staff members departed – one retired, and the other moved on to another position. Since January, she found herself working alone in the Chamber with L, her boss.
Her Boss Was Unprofessional
The woman said, “L is kind of the worst. L behaves inappropriately in the office. L overshares all details of her life, talks on the phone with family members and friends constantly throughout the day, and does hardly any work. I do not give L any details about my life (I won’t even share my weekend plans) because I don’t trust L with any personal information.”
She Tried To Maintain Boundaries
The woman even blocked L’s personal Instagram account due to L’s persistent monitoring of her social media activity. L’s behavior escalated to the point where she used their shared business account to access the woman’s Instagram “story” and commented on her post, all during work hours.
But Things Got Worse
Despite enduring L’s boundary issues to maintain a peaceful work atmosphere, things took an unexpected turn one Sunday evening. Around 4:30 PM, she and her boyfriend were on their front deck when L arrived in her car.
Her Boss Visited Her At Home
Without hesitation, L approached them and launched into a rant about a minor work-related inconvenience. It was a matter unrelated to her and hardly significant enough to warrant attention, let alone an in-person visit. L then proceeded to deliver an extensive monologue about her weekend activities before eventually leaving. In total, L spent about 10 minutes at her house, during which time she and her boyfriend remained mostly silent in disbelief.
The Woman Felt Stressed At Work
The incident left her in a state of shock, primarily because L’s behavior was shockingly rude and invasive. Her job, which offered a meagre salary, already placed significant demands on her, often requiring her to work beyond her regular hours due to events, meetings, and other responsibilities. Dealing with L’s continuous inappropriate conduct had added to her stress.
She Had Taken On Additional Responsibilities
This led the woman to start looking for another job. Although she had been initially hired as a social media intern, her role had expanded to encompass various responsibilities, including social media management, event coordination, member relations, and tourism representation. Despite taking on additional responsibilities, she had not seen her pay increase.
She Turned To The Internet For Advice
The woman wanted to talk to her boss about her overtime work and inadequate compensation. She was nervous about the conversation because she knew her boss was unprofessional and was unsure of how she would react. She sought advice on how to navigate the conversation.
