A couple, aged 36 and 33, have found themselves in a tense situation with their neighbor, Ryan, who only seems to acknowledge the husband and not the wife. Here is what he had to say:
A New Beginning Together
The couple had recently purchased their first house and had been friendly with their neighbors. The couple were incredibly excited to be living in their new home and wanted to make sure they had a good relationship with their neighbors. It was mainly other young couples in the neighborhood which suited them perfectly.
A Strange Occurrence
The wife, who is a middle school teacher, had noticed that none of their neighbors addressed her and that their wives never came with them. This was quite unusual for the couple as they did everything together and enjoyed meeting other couples. The wife wanted to hang out with other wives too but didn’t want it to be a split situation. She had mentioned it to her husband, who had brushed it off until he witnessed it himself.
It Happened!
During a conversation with Ryan and another neighbor, Frank, the wife waved and said hi, but they walked past her to talk to the husband. When the husband asked why they didn’t acknowledge his wife, they claimed not to have noticed her. When pressed, Ryan suggested that the wife should hang out with his wife so that they could all hang out together and the wife wouldn’t feel ignored. This shocked the couple as they had never experienced this kind of behaviour before.
Common Courtesy
The husband insisted that it was a matter of common courtesy and that they should acknowledge his wife when she addressed them. The husband thought this was common knowledge and had never dealt with men like this before. However, Ryan and Frank dismissed it, with Frank even making a derogatory comment about teachers. The husband lost his temper with the men and couldn’t hold it back.

The husband eventually asked them to leave his property, and they did so with half-hearted apologies. He was not about to let his wife be treated with such disrespect, especially not on their own property. This was completely unacceptable to him, and he would not stand for it. However, the situation only worsened when another neighbor informed him that Ryan and Frank were talking behind his back.

The husband is now incredibly worried that he’s brought himself and his wife into a bad neighborhood. His wife is black but fair skinned and the husband is now concerned that perhaps the men are acting with malicious intent and they have a problem with her skin color. He wasn’t sure as Ryan’s wife is Vietnamese but it could be a possibility.
Was He Wrong?
The husband is left wondering if he was in the wrong for standing up for his wife and asking his neighbors to acknowledge her. He is concerned that he may have put himself and his wife in a bad spot in their new neighborhood. He didn’t want to cause any rifts but couldn’t accept such rudeness projected towards his wife.
The Decent Thing
“I just wanted them to acknowledge my wife. It’s not about hanging out or anything like that. It’s just common courtesy,” the husband said. Whilst it would be nice for the neighbors to all hang on in a group together, the husband doesn’t expect that all the time. He does, however, expect common decency towards his wife at all times. He feels it doesn’t take much to extend mutual respect to everyone regardless of their gender.
