38-year-old Sarah lived alone in the house she grew up in, which was left to her by her mother after she passed away 10 years ago. Her neighbors, a couple around the same age, moved in next door about four years ago, and they’ve been at odds since day one.
Call the Cops…On a Dog

One of the issues they had was with Sarah’s three cats, which she sometimes let out into her backyard. Her neighbors had a dog that would jump the 5-foot chain link fence separating their yards to chase Sarah’s cats. Sarah warned them that if she caught their dog doing it again, she would call the cops. They asked her to split the cost of a taller privacy fence, but Sarah refused, and they ended up putting in a taller fence themselves.
Money Doesn’t Grow on Cut Down Trees

They also asked Sarah to split the cost of taking down an Ash tree that was on their property, but when the survey guy said the tree was actually about 10% on Sarah’s property, she told them the tree was theirs and that they would have to pay for it.
Terrible Neighbors

Their relationship continued to deteriorate, with the neighbors throwing loud, late-night parties that included bonfires and loud music that Sarah had to call the cops for. Sarah felt like she was constantly ringing the police to sort out her tyrant neighbors.
Put the Package Down

While Sarah was out of town visiting family for a couple of weeks, her friend came over to check on her cats and mail. Sarah received a notification that some packages were delivered, so she texted her friend to let her know. However, before her friend could get there, Sarah saw her neighbor on her patio through her Ring doorbell camera. He claimed that a package of theirs had been delivered to Sarah’s house by mistake and he was just grabbing it. Sarah told him to leave and that her friend would bring over his package when she came over.
She Warned Him and Then the Cops

The neighbor tried to leave with the package, but Sarah warned him that if he took a package from her porch, she would call the cops. He shoved the package in front of the camera and said, “That’s my name and address, Sarah. I’m taking my package.” Sarah called the police and reported that he had stolen a package from her. When her friend arrived later, the police were talking to her neighbors.
A HUGE Jerk

The husband yelled at Sarah’s friend, telling her to tell Sarah that she was a huge jerk and that she needed to take the police off speed-dial and let them deal with more important issues. Sarah only called the cops when she felt unsafe, so she didn’t know what her neighbor meant by this.
Upsetting Behavior

Sarah was upset by her neighbor’s behavior and felt that she had done nothing wrong. “I don’t understand why they think it’s okay to come onto my property and take things without my permission,” Sarah said. “I have a right to protect my property and my cats.”
She Felt Threatened

Despite her neighbor’s accusations, Sarah felt that she had every right to call the police when she felt her property was being threatened. “If someone is stealing from me, I’m going to call the police,” she said. “I don’t see what’s wrong with that.”
Respect Her Property

Sarah hoped that her relationship with her neighbors would improve, but she was also prepared to take legal action if necessary. “I just want them to respect my property and my privacy,” she said. “If they can’t do that, then I’ll do whatever I have to do to protect myself and my home.”
The Internet Responded

This commenter wrote, “This is a toxic situation. At each step prior to the Ring conversation, I think that you did the right thing. Even calling the cops when they are being loud after previous bad experiences makes sense to me… you don’t need to go beg them to be quiet. But, telling them to leave a package with their name on it is being a jerk. Sure, call the cops for them trespassing, but they aren’t stealing from you.”
More Internet Responses

Another person commented, “I was entirely on OP’s side with the dog and fence. That was pretty mild in the first place. She could have called animal control or, in a lot of the US, shot it. I’m glad she didn’t, but telling the neighbors to control their dog and sort their fence out by themselves if they felt they needed to upgrade it to do so was fine. This package thing is ridiculous and way out of line.”
