John is struggling with his noisy upstairs neighbors who accuse him of being racist after their package was stolen from outside of his apartment. Here is what he had to say:
Bane of His Existence
Meet John (27), a resident of a townhouse-style apartment building where he lives in the downstairs apartment with his front door facing the parking lot. His upstairs neighbor, a couple living in the 300A apartment, has become the bane of his existence due to their constant noise.
He is Suspicious
John can hear everything that they do, from rattling and bumping things to the rumble of their TV. The couple used to say hi when they first moved in, but now they don’t say anything. John suspects that they called the cops on him and a girl he was dating just for arguing after he had to deal with their noise constantly. He thinks the girl is stuck up, and the guy seems shady.
The Package Was Stolen
Last week, John received a box on his mat that wasn’t for him. It had the girl’s name on it, and since their apartment numbers are the same except for the “A” at the end of theirs, it was an understandable mistake. John didn’t steal it; he just left it there. After a couple of days, the box was gone, and John assumed that the girl had taken it. However, it turns out that the box was stolen, which is too bad.
She Provided a Photo
This morning, John was outside watering a new plant when the girl came up to him and said that she heard from a family member that they had sent her a surprise birthday present, but she never received it. She showed John the delivery photo they forwarded to her, which was the box on his mat. John said he didn’t take it, which was true.
The Neighbor Gets Upset
The girl then got upset and told John that she moves his packages from her door to his almost every week and why couldn’t he simply return the favor as it’s not an everyday occurrence having a delivery.
She Accuses Him of being Racist
John was surprised and told her that he didn’t ask her to do that and that their door mats were only five feet apart, so if he was missing a package, he could figure it out himself. The girl then accused John of having a problem with her and her boyfriend because they’re an interracial couple and used him giving her the middle finger while driving in town as “evidence.”
He Was in Shock
John was taken aback and told her that he had a problem with her and her boyfriend because they were bad neighbors and couldn’t inconvenience everyone who lived around them and then expect favors. He also mentioned that she sucked at driving and suspected that she left a small scrape on the corner of his car while parking.
He Felt Bad
John felt bad for the gift sender who was out their money, but not for the girl. However, she called him a jerk, and John wonders if he’s the one in the wrong.
He Turns to the Internet
John found himself in a tricky situation where he was left wondering if he could have done more with the delivered package or had he done totally the right thing. With this in mind, John decided to head to the internet and seek advice from a popular forum page. He were the responses:

The first commentor writes, “There is no effort on your part to put the package in the right place. A decent person would do that, regardless of how you felt about the person. In fact, it probably took you more effort to avoid the package than to move it 5 feet.
In addition, if they are too loud, that’s on you for not having a conversation with them. They aren’t being bad neighbors – you are.”

A second person puts, “This may be a bit of a stretch, but like… OP is getting really angry over totally normal noises caused by people living their lives in their own home. Like, to the extent where he is acting out and trying to punish the neighbors for it. Kinda makes me wonder how loud OP was being when they were “arguing with the girl they were dating” that ended up making the neighbours call the police.
Could it be this person has anger issues, and was actually screaming at the girl? And they called police because they were worried about her safety? Because like… from this post, I get the sense that OP is a very bitter person who is very quick to anger. Maybe that’s why they’re not dating anymore.”
