Driveway for Multiple Cars
Meet “Tom,” a homeowner in the UK who lives in a street where houses can be wildly different, even though they’re on the same street. Tom’s drive is quite wide, enough to fit 3-4 cars, and he hasn’t bothered to build any walls or fences on either side since the property came basically gutted, which is how he could afford the house in the first place.
Permits are Required
His neighbors can reach his drive/front yard on foot, and quite easily, although there’s a paved path on either side that acts as a boundary. The neighbor on his left has a small drive enough to fit 1 car, and the neighbor on his right has a large fancy front garden but no drive. There are resident permits required to park on the road.
The Neighbors Park on His Drive
Since Tom moved in at the start of 2018, he’s noticed sporadically the neighbors would park in his drive. Since he could fit his own car and his girlfriend’s car in there, he didn’t mind and things had been amicable up to this point so it wasn’t a problem.
The Neighbors Leave No Space
However, since then, he thinks their 17/18-year-old kids have passed and they’ve bought another car, and he’s noticed his drive is always full of their cars haphazardly parked, leaving no space for him or his girlfriend’s car. It isn’t a massive inconvenience to go and knock and ask them to move, but at the same time, he felt like all courtesy had gone out the window at that point.
Argumentative Neighbor
Tom has asked them to be mindful, but their English is quite poor, and he’s been treated a little abruptly. The lady who usually answers the door seems suspicious of him and can sometimes get argumentative with him, but her husband is a decent fella, and he often tells Tom that he tells his kids not to take the biscuit. He’s always at work, though, so Tom usually deals with his wife.
The Homeowner Blocks the Driveway
What Tom has decided to do now is park his car or his girlfriend’s car at an angle so as to effectively block anyone from getting in. He’s been doing that for a few weeks now, and every time he sees his neighbor (the older dad), he puts his arm up and says hello. It makes him feel a bit bad because, to be honest, he wouldn’t mind if just he parked there, but not his kids.
The Girlfriend Refuses
The neighbor’s son came to Tom’s door last night, and his girlfriend answered as he was in the shower. The son asked Tom’s girlfriend if he could please park in the drive. She said no, but both Tom and his girlfriend feel a bit guilty over it.
Straight to the Internet
Tom didn’t know what to do about this situation. So he decided to turn to the internet for advice. He posted on a popular internet forum and waited for responses.
