Alex, an 18-year-old with a complicated family situation, receives a large inheritance from his wealthy grandparents, but his parents demand that he split it with his half-sister, leading to a conflict.
Alex and His Half-Sister

Meet “Alex,” an 18-year-old who had been spending summers and every other holiday with his grandparents on his biological father’s side, who are very old and may not be around for much longer. Alex’s mom remarried when he was six to his stepdad, who is like an actual dad to him since his biological father is a terrible person and was abusive. They had Alex’s half-sister a year later, who is now 12.
Grandparent’s Inheritance

After one of their rare talks, Alex’s grandparents brought up the topic of inheritance, and it turned out that they are very well off, and Alex will most likely get quite a bit of money. This surprised Alex as he didn’t know too much about them. He didn’t expect them to talk to him so freely about money as they didn’t talk often anymore.
Planning for the Future

Alex mentioned that he will save it for a future house and to help with education costs, since his parents will not be giving him any aid for schooling fees. He thought he was being sensible by mentioning education and investing in property. He did think everyone would be pleased he wasn’t planning on blowing it all on stupid immature things.
His Parents Demand He Share with His Sister

However, that was the wrong thing to say, as his parents immediately started demanding that he split half of it with his sister. Alex didn’t refuse, but he was shocked at their reaction and didn’t really say anything. His parents’ logic was that every time Alex had to go away to visit his grandparents, his sister had to live without having her big brother and that she had faced a lot of difficulties with the situation.
“It’s not Fair”

They also said it wasn’t fair that Alex would be getting all that money, and she wouldn’t have anything, albeit is not really his parents decision at the end of the day. Alex didn’t really know what to say as the inheritance was nothing to do with him. He was just the receiver, if anyone wanted to be angry they shouldn’t direct it at him.
He Was Angry

Alex loves his sister and would give her anything she needs for college or rent when she is older, no questions asked. He would have given some of the money, maybe not half and maybe not just deposited in a bank account, but she would get anything she needed. However, he was angry about being told what to do with his money, as if they’ve been counting on this for a while, and he’s tempted to bring it up again to sort it out.
He Was Worried

Alex was worried that all this inheritance talk would cause a rift between him and his sister. He would do anything for her and he didn’t want her to think that things would change because there was a large amount of money involved. He already felt guilty about receiving so much but this was making him feel worse.
Frustrated and Torn

Alex is torn between his love for his sister and his frustration at being told what to do with his money so he turned to the internet for advice on what to do going forward. He was hoping some of the responses would give him some clarity on how to move forward and sort the ongoing issue with his family.
The Internet Responds

One commenter wrote, “YOUR grandparents may leave YOU money. Your mom is an not right for suggesting that your sister should share in that inheritance. Fortunately, you are an adult and get to make the final decision on what will happen if you inherit.”
Another Responder Puts

A second person comments, “Your mom is enabling your step dad. Don’t give them, or your sister, half of YOUR inheritance. If you want to help pay for her way through college, cool, but don’t feel obligated. It’s your mother’s, and step dad’s responsibilities, not yours.”
A Final Comment

A final person had this to say on the matter, “Your mom clearly does her best for her second child, not for you. This is your grandparent’s money. If they wanted to give it to a person unrelated to them like your stepsister, they easily could. The obviously don’t, their will is for you to get it.”
