17 Things that Declined in Quality but Increased in Price without People Realising

The rule of thumb is that things usually get better and cheaper, but there are always exceptions to the rule. An internet survey recently asked, “What has simultaneously gotten worse and more expensive?” Here are the top 18 responses:

Cable Television

“More commercials, channels upon channels of junk, and a ridiculous bill.”

“I remember when you could watch a show on cable without any commercials, and that was its big selling point.”

Big Macs

“That burger patty is a stone’s throw away from being a slice of roast beef.”

“Just order a double quarter and ask them to make it like a Big Mac. It’s more expensive, but the quality goes up.”

House Appliances

“Certain house appliances. My grandma has had the same fridge for 40 years. My parents recently had to replace theirs. It’s their third in 20 years.”

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

“The peanut butter seems chalkier, and the chocolate tastes blander. Plus, I can’t ever seem to pry them out of that little cup wrapper without leaving the bottom chocolate “skin” stuck to it.”

“I just buy the cheap store brands since they use thicker chocolate and better peanut butter.”

Homes

“Not only has the real estate market been ridiculously inflated (especially in NYC, my residence). The actual quality of a lot of these homes is horrible. Due to the ability to find and source cheap materials and labor, developers can make huge profits off high prices and low costs.”

“I live in a rural town about an hour from the nearest 100k+ city, and home prices are ridiculous compared to local wages.”

Donuts at Dunkin Donuts

“Now, with all the sandwiches, breakfast foods, shakes, smoothies, etc… donuts are an afterthought.”

“I thought I grew bigger (in age), so the donuts seemed smaller.”

Internet Service Providers

“Oh yes, sorry, your trial period was over; your bill exceeded 200 dollars. Oh no, we didn’t promise you 200mb/s download speed constantly, and we said up to. Read the fine print.”

“U-verse raising the price and adding a cap.”

Buffalo Wild Wings

“I don’t know if it’s just me, but their prices have gone up, and the quality has gone down.”

“BWWs problem is partially the change in chicken wing cost. When they and the other wing places started, wings were a throwaway item and so were cheap. As they skyrocketed in popularity, the price went up, and the size went down.”

Clothes

“Very few companies make clothes that last and fast fashion is rising while the cost of items continues to increase!”

“I have Columbia/north face jackets that are over 10 years old. Some t-shirts I have are 10 years old, and the design is a bit faded, but it’s ok.”

Scented Candles

“Yankee Candle, in particular, used to be the candle that was considered premium. But while they’ve never been cheap, at least a while ago, it was worth the money. But now they’re just outrageous in price, they don’t smell like they used to, and they are not worth the money.”

“I prefer the Bath and Body Works ones. Not usually as expensive, and the scents are much stronger.”

College Tuition

“When I hear college used to be paid with a summer job, my eyes get watery. I’m a college student.”

“A friend of mine pays for his own tuition and covers some house bills for his single mom because he lives at home, but he works 2-3 jobs year-round, including construction. I am curious to know how he does it. He’s stressed and tired all the time.”

Photo Booths

“The old ones were so cool! Four different real photos for 1 dollar, and now you pay $ 7 for four identical bad laser prints.”

“Just wait until you try to book one for a wedding. $1500 for an iPad on a stick with a ring light and printer for 4 hours.”

The Christmas Tins of Quality Street

“Be safe knowing that if you have a disappointing number of green triangles, writing about it on Twitter will get you some free ones.”

“You no longer get a giant metal tin; you now get a pathetic little plastic tub, nowhere near as many chocolates, they keep removing decent ones in favor of hard, chewy toffees, and they dare to want more money for them every year.”

Smarties

“Never been right since they got rid of all the artificial colors. Better for you, I’m sure, but chemical blue was the best flavor.”

“It got worse when they removed the tube and replaced it with that weird hexagon box. All my childhood favorites taste worse when you find out Nestle makes them all.”

Ice Cream With Fudge in It

“Used to get massive slabs of fudge. Now they have tiny nuggets.”

“I can pretty much only stand to buy Ben and Jerry’s these days, and it ruined other “frozen dairy desserts” for me.”

All Cadbury’s Products

“Kraft ruined it.”

“The Cadbury Egg is honestly the most disappointing to me because nearly every one of the food products mentioned has plenty of viable alternatives that have yet to be ruined. You can find a thousand high-quality chocolate bars, ice creams, or whatever.”

KFC

“I remember growing up, a whole family could eat there, and it was great! Now it’s just garbage, super greasy, and will cost you an arm and a leg for a bucket of chicken. They have gotten way worse, and the price has gone up.”

“Yeah, I remember big styrofoam cylinders stuffed with sides. Now it’s $5 for a frozen dinner bowl’s worth.”
