A boy tells the story of how his parents showed favoritism in financially supporting his siblings to attend college, but not him. He believed this was because he was the adopted child, and so he called them out on it, leading to a big family argument. Here is what he had to say:
He Was Adopted

The boy explained, “I’m 17 and the youngest in the family. I was adopted at the age of 4, my biological mom was best friends with my adoptive mom and she adopted me after my biological mom passed away. Any reference to parents below refers to my adoptive parents.”
His Parents Paid For His Siblings To Attend College

He had three older siblings, and his parents had fully covered their college tuition, and for two of them, they even supported their law and medical school expenses, providing a stipend for living expenses as well.
But They Wouldn’t Support Him

The boy asked his parents about college and the support he could expect, he was taken aback when he was told that there wouldn’t be any financial assistance because they had exhausted their funds after supporting his older siblings.
They Told Him To Manage On His Own

While he didn’t anticipate the same level of support, he had hoped for some help. His mother explained that his biological mom hadn’t left money for his college, so he would have to manage on his own.
He Thought They Were Playing Favorites

Feeling unsettled, the boy questioned whether this was about money or if it stemmed from him being adopted and not being considered his parents’ “real” child. Although his parents were offended by the suggestion, they maintained that financial constraints were the primary reason and that their finances would take time to recover after purchasing a condo for one of his siblings.
They Got Into An Argument

The boy explained what happened next, “I called them out and told them that I’m not buying this explanation at all and they wouldn’t be doing this to me if I were their biological child, my dad reminded me that I’m acting in an entitled way and should instead learn that we don’t always get what we want.”
He Stood His Ground

In response, the boy said he understood that many parents couldn’t fully fund their children’s college tuition, but he still believed he was being treated unfairly as they had funded his siblings and not left any money aside for him.
They Told Him To Accept Their Decision

In response, his parents said that they didn’t require his approval to support any of their children and told him to accept their decision. The boy then argued that they should also accept his belief that he was being treated differently because of his adoption, finding their parents’ explanations unconvincing.
Was He In The Wrong?

The conversation escalated, with his parents calling him an entitled brat. Now, the boy worries that he may have overstepped and wonders if his behavior made him in the wrong.
The Internet Responded

One person said, “If they were helping with college and housing for their other kids they should’ve budgeted in a way that there would be some left for you. I don’t think you are entitled for assuming that you would get the same treatment as your siblings. Have they shown favoritism like that in any other areas of your life growing up?”
Another Person Added a Comment

Of course, kids are not entitled to their parents paying for college and condos, but I think you are entitled to the same treatment as your siblings. If they support one, they should support all. Your age is not a secret, so they knew college was coming up and they are making a choice. My dad paid for college for my sisters and not for me (despite being a millionaire), so I understand that it is really hurtful.”
