A man faced an unexpected conundrum when a young child knocked on his door, offering to mow his lawn for $10. The man decided to support the young entrepreneur’s initiative despite having recently mowed the lawn, but unfortunately, things would not be that simple.
A Suspicion Arises
After only 15 minutes, the kid returned, claiming the job was done. The man was suspicious, as his yard usually took around 45 minutes to mow.
An Uneven Job
Upon inspection, the man was not satisfied with the child’s work. “It was mowed in haphazard blocky patches, with some large areas totally untouched”, he laughed.
The man politely expressed his dissatisfaction, approaching the situation kindly. “I told him he was off to a good start but I needed a uniform cut”, he recounted.
The Child’s Denial
However, the young entrepreneur wasn’t willing to continue mowing, claiming that it looked fine to him. With a sense of fairness, the man informed the kid that if he wasn’t willing to complete the job, he would need his $10 back.
However, the child was not willing to return the $10. “He started accusing me of taking advantage of him”, the man explained. “I said I was happy to pay him if he actually mowed my lawn, but if he wasn’t going to do the job I wasn’t going to pay him”.
A Standoff Over Payment
However, the child refused to return the $10 to the man. The man told the child that whilst he wasn’t going to force him to return it, he would be issuing warnings to the neighborhood to not use his mowing services.
Returning His Payment
Eventually, the child begrudgingly returned the $10. The man proceeded to complete the uneven mowing job, assuming that this problem was now in the past.
A Father’s Intervention
However, later in the day, the kid’s father appeared at the man’s door, demanding the return of the $10. “I told him I wouldn’t pay him for mowing my lawn because he didn’t finish the job, and I had to mow it just to even everything out and keep it from being an eye sore”, he remembered.
Defending His Child
However, the father was not taking no for an answer. “He railed about how his son was just trying to make honest money over the summer, asking me why I would try to discourage him from working”, the man recounted.
A Generous Offer
In an attempt to find a compromise, the man offered to give the kid $5 since he had started the job. However, the father refused this offer. He stormed away, proceeding to badmouth the man to other neighbors for supposedly taking advantage of the child.
Mixed Reactions from the Community
The situation escalated as neighbors confronted the man, with opinions split down the middle. Some neighbors defended the man for teaching the child a lesson about a hard day’s work, but others questioned why he was being so hard on a well-intentioned kid.
Reflecting on the Situation
The man began to reconsider his stance due to the mixed reactions he received from neighbors and friends. Whilst he felt that the $5 offer was a good compromise, he also acknowledged that the young kid might not have had proper guidance on lawn mowing, and perhaps he could have helped the child instead of refusing to pay him.
The Internet’s Verdict
The man headed online to an internet forum, asking whether he had acted a jerk. “Absolutely not – the kid needs to learn about work ethic, and his dad is doing him a major disservice by not making him finish the job properly”, one commenter defended.
Almost every commenter expressed their agreement with the man’s attitude. “He didn’t do his job properly, so he doesn’t get paid”, one commenter wrote. “This will be a valuable life lesson for him.”
A Single Critic
However, there was one reader who criticized the man’s decision. “It’s a young child, so you should’ve known you weren’t going to end up with a professionally manicured lawn”, they wrote. “$10 doesn’t really get you a mowed lawn anyway, so have some consideration dude.”
