Their mission was a straightforward one: a trip to the grocery store. The man and his friends headed to the store, parked, did their shopping, and then headed back out to the car park.
The Return
The man drove the car back to Sam’s place, and to his delight, the original car parking spot was still available. He parked the car and promptly returned the keys to Sam, believing his task to be successfully accomplished.
The Unforeseen Parking Law
The following morning, the dorm buzzed with talk of freshman students receiving parking tickets. Unbeknownst to many students, the college town had an “alternate side parking” law in effect from November to March. This required cars to be parked on the opposite side of the street every night, allowing snowplows to navigate in the event of snowfall.
The Request for Payment
Sam sent the man a text message, informing him that he had been issued a parking ticket on his behalf, and would need payment. “I responded saying I had parked it in the exact same spot meaning it would have been ticketed regardless of me driving it or not”, explained the man.
Another Request
Sam didn’t accept this excuse, and once again asked the man for payment. However, the man once again refused, this time raising his voice and expressing more anger toward Sam.
Rising Tension
The man turned to a mutual friend of his and Sam’s to gauge their opinions on the matter. “I was shocked when people said I should just pay for the ticket”, the man wrote. “It was maybe $80, which is relatively pricey being a freshman with no job.”
A Reluctant Stance
The man remained steadfast in his reluctance to shoulder the entire burden of the parking ticket. He expected Sam to at least propose a compromise, perhaps splitting the cost or reimbursing him for gas expenses. However, Sam persisted in demanding the full ticket price.
Telling the Web
The man headed online with one question on his mind: was it really fair for him to be fully responsible for paying for the parking ticket? To the man’s disappointment, everyone believed that Sam was right. “You parked it, your ticket”, stated one reader simply. “He did you a favor.
