They Had a German Shepherd
The man said, ‘My neighbors seem to be lovely people, but they have a dog (German Shepard) that spends the majority of her time outside.’
It Was Always Outside
He liked his neighbors, but their dog’s constant barking was a nightmare. The dog would be outside, barking, 22 hours a day, non-stop. Since he and his family lived in a suburb, the houses were extremely close to each other, and the noise was infuriating.
He Woke Them Up
The man loved to garden, but the noise constantly disrupted his favorite hobby. Even when his kids played outside, the dog ruined it by barking. But things got really bad when the man and his family woke every day at 6 am…
They Wouldn’t Do Anything About it
The dog would bark at 6 am when his owner left the house for work. After, the man and his family would try to get back to sleep, only to be woken again at 6.45 am when the owner’s wife left for the day. The man had often asked his neighbors to do something, but it never stopped.
It Was a Year of Constant Noise
A year passed, and the dog was still waking the man and his family daily. The neighbors were apologetic, but the only thing they ever did to stop their dog barking was take him inside for 15 minutes between 6.30 and 6.45. It didn’t resolve anything! So, the man took matters into his own hands.
He Silenced the Dog Himself
The man purchased a device that used sound to scare the dog into not barking. It changed his life! He and his kids could sleep till 7.30 am instead of 6 am. What made it even better was that the man could finally enjoy his hobby!
It Worked!
The man could garden peacefully. Without the constant barking, he was able to sit outside and hear the birdsong. To thank the dog, he fed him some treats, and he appeared to be happy. Clearly, the machine wasn’t hurting him.
He Could Bark Elsewhere
He was extremely pleased with himself for resolving a year-long issue but didn’t tell his neighbors. The machine had a radius of 15 feet, and the dog’s yard was 40 meters wide, so if he wanted to, he could bark on the other side of the garden. It was a win-win situation! But not everyone felt that way…
His Friend Called Him Inhumane
The man said, ‘A friend of mine told me I’m being unreasonable and inhumane and that the dog is for security purposes and needs to bark.’
Was He Being Unreasonable?
The man was frustrated by his friend’s response. Surely, his kid’s sleep was more important than a dog’s need to bark? He thought he did the right thing, but doubt filtered into his mind. So, he turned to the internet for advice.

One person said, ‘Do consider discontinuing the thing after a few weeks or place it on a timer that shuts off during daylight hours.’

Another commented, ‘He barks because he’s lonely, bored, and has no outlet for his pent-up energy.’
A final comment criticized the owners, ‘Your neighbors aren’t properly caring for this dog, it shouldn’t be left outside alone and lonely. The poor thing is sad, bored, and crying for attention.’
