A man lived in a particularly nice neighborhood and was familiar with all of his neighbors. However, one day, he would encounter somebody whom he had never seen before, and their recurring presence would lead him to make a decision that would prove controversial.

The man explained that there weren’t many people within his neighborhood that he hadn’t met. “I’ve lived here for about 2 years and it’s a small neighborhood, so I know just about everyone who lives here.”
A Beautiful Summer
As the summer weather arrived, the man noticed that more and more residents would spend time outside. He would see runners, bikers, and walkers going past his house on a daily basis, all of whom he recognized from the area.
A Mysterious Stranger
However, one day the man saw somebody pass his house that he had never seen before. He described the man as suspicious, something that stuck out due to the friendly nature of the neighborhood.
A Reoccuring Appearance
The man didn’t think much of this until the suspicious man began to reappear. “He must have passed by my house about 4 times within a short period of time, and that scared me”, he recounted. “I don’t know if he was doing laps around the subdivision, or casing my house and my neighbors.”
Calling the Cops
Due to the unfamiliar nature of the suspicious man and how he passed by the man’s house multiple times, he decided that he should take action. He called the non-emergency police, who assured him that someone would be coming by soon.
The Police Arrived
A police car arrived shortly after the man’s call and began patrolling the neighborhood, searching for the suspicious man. However, the man explained that he was not aware of what happened after they arrived.

Later that day, the man told his friends about the suspicious man in his neighborhood. They were worried and asked him what the man looked like, and he explained that he had dark-colored skin.

The man’s friends were furious when they found out the man had dark-colored skin. They believed that he was racially profiling, and only felt that he was suspicious because of his skin color.

However, the man defended himself against these accusations. “I told them that this was nonsense and that I would have done the same if he were white, Mexican, or any ethnicity”, he recounted. “It wasn’t his skin color that made me suspicious of him – it was how he passed by my house so many times in a short period of time.
Questioning His Actions
Despite believing that he reported the suspicious man for good reason, the man became conflicted. He wondered whether he had overreacted to the scenario, and even began to question whether the suspicious man’s skin color had subconsciously influenced his decision to report him.
