A man lived in a lively neighborhood, and considering his love for spooky festivity, he would always take it upon himself to transform his home into a spectacular Halloween display. Most of his neighbors loved his decorations, but this year, a critic would emerge that would make him question whether he had gone too far.
A Halloween Enthusiast
The man expressed his genuine love for festivities: “Every year, I go really big for Halloween and Christmas. My house is typically the most-visited and talked about house in my big neighborhood.”
New Additions to the Spooky Collection
In an effort to take his Halloween decorations to the next level, the man introduced a series of new elements to his display. “I’ve added a scary butcher guy and his deli case full of body parts”, laughed the man. “I also have skeletons climbing all over the roof, a graveyard with a grave digger guy, and a headless horseman.”
A Positive Response
As usual, the man’s decorations received a very positive response. People of all ages, from young children to old ladies, expressed their joy and appreciation for his spooky display.
A Surprising Critique Emerges
However, to the man’s surprise, an unexpected development occurred. He was a member of a neighborhood community app, and a lady posted on the platform, expressing her disapproval of the Halloween display.
Making Kids Cry
In her post, the woman described the supposed consequences of the man’s decorative display. She claimed that she and her family found his house horrifying, and stated that it had frightened her toddlers to the point of tears.
Accusations of Insensitivity
The man couldn’t believe what the woman was saying: “She went on a rant about how terrible of a person I must be to put such scary things in my yard in a family neighborhood, and how I should respect others’ fears and take it all down.”
A Defense of Festive Fun
The man immediately responded to the online critique. He emphasized that his display was created purely for fun and the enjoyment of the community. He asserted that he was not promoting any form of depravity or advocating for violence, as the woman had implied.
The man also raised a valid point about parental responsibility. “If you see a house that might freak out your kids, it’s your job as the parent to either turn around and walk away, or explain to them how it’s not real and that they shouldn’t be scared… not to stand right in front of it, take photos, then put your neighbor on blast on social media”, he ranted.
Praised by the Community
The man was relieved to see that he was supported by all. Other members of the online neighborhood community came to his defense, berating the woman for her overreaction and applauding the man for standing up for himself.
Despite this support, the man couldn’t help but feel afflicted. Whilst he too believed that the woman’s accusations were ridiculous, he did feel guilty for supposedly bringing a child to tears. He wondered whether he had truly gone too far this year, and perhaps he should at least take down some of the more horrifying decorations.
The man vented his frustrations on an internet messageboard, asking readers whether they agreed with the woman’s accusations, or with his reluctance to remove his decorations. However, the verdict soon became very clear. “Neighborhood apps are full of whiny killjoys”, someone laughed. “If you want to be petty, you could thank her for the free publicity.”
Many readers found the woman’s accusations of his decorations being ‘horrifying’ rather ironic. “It’s Halloween… people decorate their house with scary stuff on Halloween… is this lady new to planet Earth or something?”, laughed one reader.
A Bit Too Much
Whilst everyone felt that the woman’s cries were over the top, some people still agreed with her sentiment. “Butchered body parts are a bit too much for me”, someone criticized. “I can see how that would scare children for real.”
