A man owned a small business on a main road, which attracted an enormous amount of traffic. Despite running the business for over eight years, the man would soon find out that out of nowhere, he would face a parking conflict that he deemed unnecessary.
A Busy Street
The man’s business shared its street with an assortment of establishments, apartments, and restaurants. The street that the business was situated on was infamous for its ceaseless stream of vehicles, both in traffic and parking on both sides of the road.
His Usual Parking Spot
The man explained how he would normally navigate the street’s parking chaos: “There is a single house on the street, and they have two driveways but keep part of them closed off by a movable fence. They had no problem with people parking on the street, so I’ve always parked along the curb between the two driveways on that street – it’s public property.”
The Unexpected Note
However, out of nowhere, the man received an unexpected note on his car. “Good morning – I am writing you to ask if you would find parking that is not in front of our house”, the note read. “My roommate and I have limited parking spaces. I apologize for the inconvenience”.
Couldn’t Understand
The man failed to understand why this note had been necessary. “The current tenants have two cars, one that parks in the driveway and the other on the street”, he wrote. “Their driveway has plenty of space, and my favorite spot is a public parking space – they have no right to claim it!”
His Anger
The man admitted that he became rather angry at the polite note. He had been parking in this spot for years and had never had any problems, and couldn’t see any legitimate reasons why he shouldn’t park there.
A Huge Inconvenience
The man also explained that losing this parking space would be a huge inconvenience for him. It had been a lifeline for many years, and without it, he would be struggling every day to find an alternative space.
Changing Spot
Despite his frustrations, the man complied with the note’s wishes. He moved his car and decided that he would no longer be parking there, anxiously anticipating the parking chaos that he would soon deal with on a day-to-day basis.
A Note in Response
To vent his frustrations, the man left his own note to the tenants in return. “I hope you understand that even if I don’t park there, someone else well”, he wrote. “It is a busy PUBLIC street. Have the day you deserve.”
A Change in Their Parking
However, the man’s hypothesis that someone else would take his spot did not come true. “They’ve actually decided to park in the spot themselves now, purposefully double-parking so no other cars can park there”, he lamented.
Reflecting on His Note
The man couldn’t help but question whether his actions were just. He realized that the note was somewhat petty, but he firmly believed that his favorite roadside parking spot was not the tenants’ property. He believed their actions were entitled, and were causing him unnecessary difficulty.
The Internet’s Verdict
The man headed online with his parking woes, seeking validation for his frustration. The response was mixed. “You are correct that they don’t own this space, and you have zero obligation to not park there”, one reader wrote. “However, your note sounded unnecessary. They probably would have heard you out if you’d just been polite.”

Almost everyone agreed that whilst the man did nothing wrong with his parking, the note was rude. “You are in the wrong because of the note”, another reader agreed. “You could have just ignored the note and continued to park where you wanted but you had to get snarky right back.”
