Her Aunt Held Extreme Christian Views, Stating That Non-Believers Lived Shorter Lives and Deserved To Suffer – Was She Wrong To Question Her Beliefs?

A 25-year-old woman lived in a multicultural country where there were multiple commonly practiced religions. Whilst this was often something she found beautiful, it was also a recipe for controversy, something she would soon experience all too closely during a discussion with her aunt.

Aunt’s Christian Perspective

The woman’s aunt, who was 56 years old, held an unwavering Christian perspective. “She will try to convert everyone she meets to Christianity, and everything she says will never leave this topic”, the woman explained.

During a recent visit to her Aunt’s house, the woman was met with the usual onslaught of Christian preaching. “She was saying that everyone who is non-Christian is ‘bad and evil’ and everyone who is Christian is good”, she recounted. “I think that’s nonsense – there are both good and bad people from all religions.”

The aunt went on to recount her friend’s near-death experience, attributing her survival solely to God’s intervention. “I was scratching my head and asking her whether her friend thanked the doctors and nurses too”, she explained.

A Christian Response

Unexpectedly, the aunt stated that she only thanked God. “She said that doctors can only heal your physical body, while God will heal your soul so the credit lies with God”, she continued.

Divine Protection

The woman’s frustration escalated even further when her aunt insinuated that her Christian faith granted her and her family divine protection against accidents. She implied that non-Christians deserved to suffer, hoping it would lead them to embrace Christianity. The woman snapped, asking “So all non-Christians deserve to die?”, but her question was brushed aside.

Questioning Her Mortality

The woman’s boiling point was reached when her aunt asserted that non-Christians had shorter lifespans due to their lack of faith. The woman described her response: “The words came rolling out of my mouth before I could stop them. ‘I am only 25, but should I drop dead tomorrow since apparently I have already lived long enough as I am an atheist?”

The woman’s aunt once again dodged the woman’s question. She was clearly unwilling to smite her niece, but she appeared visually hurt by her doubt in her beliefs. The woman realized that her lines of questioning were falling on deaf ears.

Bizarre Reasoning

The woman had left the visit to her aunt in disbelief. She had always been tolerant of her aunt’s Christian beliefs but felt that what she was now expressing was far more extreme. She questioned whether these were beliefs that Christians genuinely as a whole believed, or if they were unique to her aunt.

The woman had noticed how her lines of questioning were only serving to distress her aunt. She hadn’t let it get out of hand but worried that if she continued to question her extreme beliefs, she might end up hurting their relationship. She considered keeping quiet next time, taking her aunt’s beliefs at face value.

Telling the Internet

Posting on her favorite social media platform, the woman sought advice, explaining her perspective and describing her aunt’s extreme statements. She asked Christian readers whether these beliefs were common within the religion. “This is not normal”, responded one Christian reader. “It’s extreme and everyone should be annoyed by it, not just non-believers.”

Unanimous Defense

The woman was relieved to be met with defense from Christians and atheists alike. “You did nothing wrong!”, wrote another person. “Sometimes fundamentalists need to be shown their place and that not everyone is part of their cult.”

Not Very Christian of Her

Many Christian readers noted that the aunt’s beliefs were not in line with the religion at all. “Those aren’t Christian beliefs… like at all”, another Christian wrote. “She’s missing one of the most BASIC tenants Jesus laid out. Go ahead and let her know that those who judge out of turn shall be judged in turn.”

Wasting Her Time

However, the overall verdict was sadly that the woman was wasting her time. “Actually… it’s probably better to just ignore her existence”, continued the previous commenter.

“Yup – your only mistake was trying to reason with Jesus freaks”, agreed another.
