A woman incurred the wrath of her family because she wanted to respect her uncle’s wishes in his will. Things escalated and now she is left worrying if she is in the wrong. Here is what she had to say:
Her Brother Was Spoilt
The woman explained, “My brother Ben (35 years old) is spoilt. My Mom favored him over us girls. He always got what he wanted, or he threw tantrums, even at my sister’s funeral (she was 16 years old. Ben was 14 years old at that time, and I was 11 years old).”
She Liked Her Grandparents
On the other hand, the woman’s grandparents from her father’s side of the family had shown love and acceptance when their uncle came out as gay at 22. Despite the initial shock, the grandparents embraced him, and the family remained close until their grandparents passed away in 2016.
Her Uncle Wanted His Estate Equally Shared
After their grandparents’ death, their aunt and uncle disowned the gay uncle, but he found solace and support in the woman’s father and their family. In 2019, he was diagnosed with lung cancer, and he entrusted her brother, Ben, with the role of executor in his will, Ben accepted believing he and his sister would share equally in his estate.
Ben Wasn’t Upset By His Passing
When their uncle passed away in May 2021, the woman repeatedly tried to contact Ben to inform him and say goodbye, but he didn’t respond. At the funeral, Ben seemed more cheerful than mournful. Eventually, they discovered that their uncle had divided his estate into four equal parts, leaving a share for Ben, the woman, their uncle’s boyfriend, and cancer research.
He Wanted More
Ben was angry with the division of the estate, believing he deserved half and that the other half should be split among the remaining beneficiaries. He took the matter to court in October 2022, contesting the will. The woman testified in court, stating that Ben’s claim was unfounded and that their uncle’s wishes should be respected.
The Court Didn’t Rule In His Favor
Despite his anger and confidence in winning the case, Ben did not get the outcome he wanted. The court ruled that all beneficiaries should receive an equal share of the estate, and Ben’s attempts to contest the will failed. As a result, Ben and the woman each received a quarter of the estate.
Everyone Turned On The Woman
The woman explained what happened next, “He went nuts demanding I compensate him because I cost him “his” money. My mother blew up my phone with “How could I do this to her baby” and relatives are telling me I did the wrong thing. Mum banned me from Christmas (my parents divorced when I was 16) because of my “poor behavior” and told everyone I refused to come after what I did.”
Things Got Worse
The woman was shocked by this behavior as she felt she hadn’t done anything wrong – she had simply respected her uncle’s wishes. She thought Ben was acting very petty and was hurt and frustrated when she found out what he did at his New Year’s Eve Party. The woman explained, “My sister-in-law sent me a message saying “sorry” with a picture of my photo on Ben’s dartboard and a sign telling his guests to throw darts at me and to message my number and tell me I’m a jerk.”
Was The Woman In The Wrong?
Nevertheless, the woman found herself questioning if she was in the wrong because of the backlash from her family. Therefore, she turned to the internet for advice.
