The Mother’s Support
The daughter came out as transgender a year ago and began her transition. The mother, being bi and raised by a gay couple, was always very accepting and understanding of her daughter’s gender identity. She fully embraced her daughter’s journey and wanted to support her transition in any way she could.
The Father’s Conservatism

Ex-Husband’s Family Tradition
The ex-husband’s mother had a tradition involving two specific photos taken with the males in the family when they turned 16. It involved them wearing a formal suit, recreating a previous generation’s photo. After her daughter transitioned, the mother assumed that this tradition would be dropped until her other child turned into a 16-year-old man.
Reluctance To Change Tradition
Despite the mother’s thoughts, her ex-husband and his family planned to continue the photograph tradition, as they did not accept that the young girl had transitioned. When her 16th birthday came about, her father and his mother insisted on taking the photograph, encouraging her to wear a suit despite her not feeling comfortable with it.
Haircut For The Photograph
The daughter reluctantly accepted to be a part of the suit photograph but drew the line when her dad’s mother told her it was time for a haircut. After she declined, the ex-grandmother suggested that the girl tie her hair into a ponytail to make the length less obvious, which the girl complied with.
A Nasty Trick
Unfortunately, this suggestion was nothing but a nasty trick. Once the daughter had tied her hair up into a ponytail, the ex-grandmother went behind her back and cut it off against the girl’s will.
Humiliation And Distress
The young girl was humiliated and distressed, and immediately left her father’s house to return home to her mother. When she got home, the mother attempted to fix the haircut, styling her daughter’s hair to look feminine again.
Anger At Ex-Husband
The mother was furious at her ex-husband and his family for cutting the girl’s hair against her wishes. She began looking into legal options to prevent her daughter from going back to her father’s place. The custody agreement was made over a decade ago, and the mother believed it was time to revisit the arrangement, as both children are now teenagers.
