Her Husband Rejoined a Strict Church After His Father Passed Away, But Now He Won’t Allow His Wife to Play Video Games or Drink Alcohol

When her husband’s father passed away, he rejoined the evangelical church and now claims that his wife is addicted to ‘tools of Satan’. He wants her to go to couples counseling and join the church but she refuses. Here’s what she had to say:

Her Husband Left The Evangelical Church

She explained, “My husband and I met in college and have been married for six years. My husband was raised in a strict evangelical household but broke away from those beliefs around the time we met.”

They had a very happy marriage until her husband’s father passed away very suddenly. She added, “My husband was and is, very understandably, completely devastated – he had remained very close to his father, despite no longer following the religious beliefs of his childhood.”

Her husband rejoined the church in honor of his father’s memory. She stated, “Unfortunately, it is one of those churches that forbids many things I find fun and relatively harmless and classifies them as “addictions” or “tools of Satan.”

Previously, the couple had enjoyed alcoholic drinks occasionally and legally enjoyed weed or edibles once a month. She explained, “After joining the church my husband decided he was an alcoholic and drug addict. He is now insisting that I am also an addict because I don’t want to give all these things up.”

She eventually agreed to give up weed and agreed not to have alcohol in the house but would still have the occasional drink when out with friends.

She added, “The latest is that my husband’s pastor told him video games are sinful and now my husband is insisting I have a video game addiction and need treatment. Gaming is a main hobby for me, probably around 8-10 hours a week.”

The woman explained, “My husband wants me to start going to church with him. He says he will go to couples counseling but only through his church, not to a secular counselor.” She told him that she wanted to be supportive through his grief by giving up certain things but would not become evangelical and restrict herself to all activities that she enjoys.

She asked him to stop labeling habits as an addiction and he expressed that she was being mean to him during his grief. She added, “Most of our family members and friends also think I should do what he asks in the name of being supportive.”

Is She In The Wrong?

Is she wrong to refuse to give up certain habits and join the church? Should she handle the situation differently?

She Turned To The Internet For Advice

One user commented, “You’ve already made far more concessions to him than I feel like you need to. I appreciate he is grieving but you shouldn’t have to change your entire life to be supportive.”

“Counseling through the church will NOT help. They will just reiterate what he is telling you. Don’t change who you are. You are doing a wonderful job of being supportive but he is asking WAY too much. I am hoping he comes back to himself and you both can laugh about this later.”

Someone Else Suggested

“I’d have a major issue with all of these – especially as someone who very deliberately married a man who was not and had never been raised as Christian.”

“Your husband is being unreasonable and unhealthy. He may practice whatever faith he wants; being married does not obligate you to do the same. If your husband doesn’t get back to himself then sadly I don’t know if your marriage will last.”
