Her Neighbors Assumed They Could Park on Her Property so She Took Petty Revenge and Parked Sideways Instead

The woman’s new dream house with her own parking space became a constant source of frustration when her neighbors took advantage of it without asking her.

A Dream Home

The woman had recently moved from an apartment to a new house with a yard for her dog, which was a dream come true. However, parking in her neighborhood was a bit of a challenge. The neighborhood only had parking on one side of the street, opposite from her house, or parking spaces in the alley behind the houses.

Her landlord had put gravel out behind her yard on the property for parking, and the space was big enough for two cars, maybe three if all were small and squeezed together. Her neighbors knew that it was just her living there, and it wasn’t often that she had company, so usually, it was just her using that space.

However, lately, her neighbors had been taking it upon themselves to use her extra space whenever they had company over. The first time she didn’t mind, but it had been happening more frequently, and they were doing so without asking her if it was okay. While she didn’t have company over a lot, she had someone over on Mondays and Wednesdays who used that spot.

The woman started parking her car crooked so no one could utilize that spot except her, unless she moved it when she knew someone was coming over. So now, whenever the neighbors had company, they had to park across the street or squeeze in where they could.

Shrugging It Off

One day, her neighbor saw her outside with her dog and asked her why she started parking like that. She shrugged and said it made it easier to back up, which it did. He asked if she could start parking normally again, to which she replied no.

He explained that the previous tenants had let them use the extra space, so they just assumed she would too. She pointed out that she wasn’t the previous tenant and whatever arrangements they made didn’t carry over when she moved in. His response was that she was rude, and now his family couldn’t use that extra space when they came over, and they had frequent get-togethers.

The woman told him that wasn’t her problem, and he told her she was a jerk before going back inside.

Should She Let It Go?

She was left wondering if she should let it go so they could use that spot since she was new to the neighborhood and didn’t want to cause problems. She reflected on the situation, saying, “If they would have asked ahead of time, I wouldn’t have minded at all, and I would have explained about my particular days with company. It’s the assumption that it’s okay without asking first that ticked me off.”

The Internet Responded

This commenter wrote, “For all you know the previous tenant did not let them park in those spots either and the neighbors are lying about being able to do so. If you want to be nice tell them you will allow it if they ask in advance each time and it does not interfere with your plans for visitors.”

More Internet Opinions

Another person posted this opinion, “I believe if a neighbor had come over and asked if they could use that spot you probably would have been okay with that. No one appreciates being taken advantage of though so their behavior only showed you what bad neighbors they were.”
