Spicy Wine
Emily, a 23-year-old woman, shared an apartment with two roommates, Morgan (28), and Sarah (25). Morgan would sometimes have friends over to watch movies and drink wine. Emily didn’t really drink wine except for a spicy wine infused with hot peppers that she had found at a winery during a trip with her sister. She had bought the bottle and kept it in her section of the shared pantry, intending to save it for a special occasion or to share with her sister.
A SHOCK
However, one Friday night, Emily came home to find Morgan and two friends drinking her bottle of spicy wine. She confronted Morgan about it, and Morgan explained that her friend had opened it without knowing it was Emily’s. Morgan also thought it would be okay to drink it because Emily had “said that she doesn’t like wine before.” Emily found this to be an unacceptable excuse, as that was the only wine she had ever enjoyed enough to buy a bottle of, and there was barely a full glass left.
She Wants the SAME Wine
Emily asked Morgan to replace the wine, and Morgan agreed. However, a couple of weeks later, Morgan said that she had gotten Emily another bottle of wine, but it was just regular wine from the liquor store. Emily clarified that she wanted the actual wine that Morgan and her friends had drunk. Morgan’s eyes got wide, and she started complaining about how the winery was a three-hour drive away and that it wasn’t fair because it was her friend who had opened the wine and not her.
No Excuses Please
Emily didn’t care about Morgan’s excuses. She pointed out that Morgan knew the wine was hers and let her friends drink it anyway. Morgan could have told her friend that it was Emily’s wine, put it away, and told Emily about it, and Emily would have understood. But no, Morgan let her friends drink it, and she even poured herself a glass. She was still drinking it when Emily came home.
Replace It No Matter What!
Emily told Morgan that her friend could replace the wine, or Morgan could. She didn’t care how. She just wanted another bottle before the lease was up next year and she moved out. Morgan was mad at Emily and started avoiding hanging out in the shared living room and wouldn’t speak to her at all.
Just Drop It
Sarah, their third roommate, thought that Emily was being unreasonable and wanted her to just drop it and accept the regular wine bottle as a replacement, so Morgan would “get back to her old self.” Emily felt bad and wondered if she was being too harsh. She began to question if she was the one in the wrong in this situation. Emily had always tried to be a good roommate and didn’t want to cause any tension in the apartment.
She Knew!
However, Emily couldn’t shake off the feeling that Morgan was in the wrong. She had known that the wine was Emily’s, and she still let her friends drink it without Emily’s permission. Emily had every right to be upset and demand that the wine be replaced.
It Must Be Replaced
Despite Sarah’s opinion, Emily stood her ground and insisted that Morgan or her friend replace the wine with the actual bottle that they had drunk. She didn’t want just any old bottle of regular wine from the liquor store. It was about the principle of the matter.
Tense Rift
Emily’s insistence caused a rift between her and Morgan, and it made her feel uncomfortable in her own home.
