Olivia, a homeowner in a High Cost of Living city, faces a dilemma with her roommates when she offers the master bedroom to one of them at a discounted rate, leading to a huge fight and causing her to consider selling her house.
Olivia owns a house in a High Cost of Living (HCOL) city, and she has four roommates, including one couple and two single people, with whom she has a lease agreement and security deposit as well as first and last month’s rent.
Money Saving Expert
Olivia rents to them at below market rate because she didn’t have to advertise or arrange for a property manager. She couldn’t be bothered to sort out getting a property manager and it saved her a lot of money not having one.
“Between the four of them, I collect enough to cover the mortgage and utilities with a little left over,” Olivia said. “I save my money and use it to pay for major repairs and maintenance.”
A Fresh Start
However, Olivia will be starting a new job in a different city in the new year, and she knew about this back in late October, so she offered the couple an opportunity to take over the basement suite in the new year for a little bit more money, which they agreed to and let her know that they were planning on moving out in one year, so they would be willing to sign a one-year lease.
A Brand New Home Office
Olivia asked the two singles if either of them wanted to take the master bedroom that would be empty, but they both declined and asked if they could turn it into a home office for them, for which Olivia said sure, but they would have to cover the rent for the room.
A Whole Room for FREE?
However, the two singles thought Olivia was being unreasonable, as they believed that she should keep their rent the same and let them have the room for free, even though Olivia offered it to them for 80% of what she was getting before.
“They called me a selfish jerk for taking all their money,” Olivia said. “Even if they took the deal, they would still be paying less than market value for a single room in our city.”
A Big Fight
The situation turned into a huge fight, and the people who initially referred the renters to Olivia called her a greedy jerk for trying to suck money out of their friends, leaving Olivia feeling like she didn’t need to deal with any of this.
Sold and Away
“I found a property investor who was willing to buy my house and honor my current leases, including the new one for the couple,” Olivia said. “Unfortunately, for the other two renters, their leases are up in February, and I imagine that the rents will be going up a fair bit. But that isn’t my problem anymore.”
Easier to Walk
Olivia felt bad because if she wasn’t moving, she would stay and deal with it, but it was just easier to walk away. She didn’t need the stress of dealing with this situation, a new job, and a house move all in one.

Another person posted, “Do you think they’d still be jerks to you if you had rented that master suite out to someone else? They are the greedy people wanting something for free (which is taking money from you) when they’re already getting an awesome deal. Do what benefits you – sell away.”
A Final Comment
This last commenter said, “Don’t feel bad. They tried to take advantage of you here. They had a really good thing, a situation that a lot of people would envy, and they blew it because they got greedy. This is entirely on them.”
