A man named John had been working at an office for eight years and had built a solid reputation among his colleagues and management. Everything was going well until a new employee named Ted joined the team.
A Cringe-Worthy Introduction
When Ted was introduced to John by their supervisor, things immediately went south. Ted repeatedly called John by the wrong name. He would persistently call the man ‘Jack’ even after the matter was raised with John’s supervisor. In response, Ted would say “Jack is close enough for me”.
A Stubborn Habit Persists
Despite reminders from supervisors and John himself, Ted continued to address John incorrectly. John had finally had enough and decided to take a stand. “I said ‘You either use my name, or I ignore you completely, no matter what the situation is’”, John recalled. Ted’s response was an antagonizing, “Sure thing, Jackie boy.”
The Breaking Point
Since John didn’t work directly with Ted, he chose to ignore him. However, things escalated when Ted needed a ride back to the office after a business trip. He was due to return a rental car and stated to John (once again calling him Jack) that he expected a lift. John decided to stick to his ultimatum and ignored Ted’s request.
A Rainy Dilemma
As promised, John ignored Ted’s calls when he didn’t turn up to pick him up, leaving Ted stranded in the rain. “E-mails poured in every 5-10 minutes, addressing me as Jack, Jack-o, Jackie, and Jackie-boy”, he explained. “The emails also started being laced with profanity and a couple of threats.” Furious, John decided to sign off and go home.
The following morning, Ted had not given up. He sent more emails, further escalating the situation. At 10am, Ted stormed up to John’s desk, furious. “Where the heck were you!?”, Ted exclaimed. “I told you when to pick me up! I HAD TO TAKE A CAB! DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THAT COST ME?!”. His tirade continued until his supervisor intervened.
Confronting the Supervisor
John explained the situation to Ted’s supervisor, showing him the printed emails with the threats highlighted. The supervisor seemed to understand John’s perspective but he still criticized his actions.
The Supervisor’s Explanation
“I can see why you wouldn’t want to spend time around him”, the supervisor stated. “But it was still kind of inconsiderate to leave him stranded in the rain. That’s not the greatest neighborhood, and he could have been hurt.”
Thankfully, with the threats and Ted’s probationary status in mind, the supervisor took action. However, when informing John of this, he also gave him a stark warning. “He no longer works here”, the supervisor stated. “Just try not to be a jerk in retaliation to your co-workers.”
John’s actions had stirred mixed reactions in the office. Some accused John of being a jerk, while others sympathized with his predicament. John on the other hand felt that he had done nothing wrong and that all of this drama could have been avoided if Ted had simply called him by his real name.
John headed online to vent his frustration, recounting the events from his perspective. To his relief, the internet came to his defense. “What is that dude’s problem?!”, someone asked. “Why on earth would he think it’s okay to not call you by your actual name?”
Ted Did This to Himself
Everyone reassured John that he did nothing wrong. “Ted got himself fired”, another commenter wrote. “You didn’t force him to swear or make threats, and he could have asked the company for a reimbursement on the cab fare. I don’t know why people think they are entitled to favors from people they’re disrespectful to.”
The Supervisor Didn’t Help
Whilst the supervisor had reminded Ted once or twice of John’s name, many readers felt that he hadn’t intervened sufficiently. “Your supervisors should have dealt with this properly before it escalated like this”, expressed another reader. “You shouldn’t be expected to take that kind of harassment.”
One commenter had a simple yet poignant idiom that they believed summarised the situation perfectly. “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”, they wrote.
