His Late Mother-In-Law Favored One Granddaughter Over The Other, Excluding The Other From Her Will – Would He Be Wrong To Split The Inheritance Fairly?

A man had two daughters, Elise and Rea, the two only grandchildren of the man’s late mother-in-law. When the woman sadly passed away, she left an inheritance to the family, but due to favoritism, only one of the man’s children would receive anything.

The Inheritance

The inheritance passed down by the grandmother totaled $30,000, and the man had assumed that it would be shared equally between her two grandchildren when they turned 21. However, he soon discovered that Elise was the sole recipient, leaving Rea with nothing.

Family History of Favoritism

The deceased mother-in-law had a history of favoring Elise over Rea. “Elise wanted to follow in her footsteps and be just like her”, the man explained. “She spent so much more time with Elise, teaching her her profession and using her connections to get her set up in her field. She even made sure she got a small amount of land that she used to set up greenhouses.”

Surprise From the Past

After the mother-in-law’s passing, the man received notice of a trust created by the late mother-in-law a decade earlier. The trust indeed stipulated that it should be evenly divided between the two grandchildren when the youngest turned 21.

A New Condition

However, the man called the trust provider to discuss this but received some shocking news: “We got the answer that unfortunately, only Elise is eligible to withdraw any money from this trust. My mother-in-law set up a clause that anyone who had a child before the inheritance age of 21 was automatically disqualified. Elise had a child before she was 21.”

Seeking a Fair Resolution

The family was now faced with a dilemma. The father was infuriated by the perceived injustice and believed Elise should share the inheritance with her sister. He saw the clause as a deliberate move by his late mother-in-law to slight Rea once again.

Different Perspectives

Elise, on the other hand, argued that they should respect their mother-in-law’s wishes and not challenge the trust. She believed that going against the will would be wrong, even if it meant benefiting disproportionately.

A Neutral Standpoint

The father’s wife, stuck between her husband and her daughters, tried to maintain a neutral stance in the ongoing dispute. She didn’t want the situation to escalate tensions further within the family.

Considering Legal Advice

The man was reluctant to leave things how they were. The only way the man could see that they could navigate this situation fairly was to seek legal counsel and explore potential options for rectifying the situation.

His Reflections

The entire conflict has given the father significant stress. On one side, he understood Elise’s logic that they should obey the legal requests of her late grandmother. On the other hand, he felt that Rea had always been treated unfairly by his mother-in-law, and agreeing to give the entire inheritance to Elise would be yet another example of this.

Seeking Guidance From Others

The man headed online, asking a forum whether it would be wrong to seek legal action and split the inheritance fairly between Elise and Rea. Initially, many readers supported the man. “You are being a good father, wanting both children to have something”, one reader wrote. “Your wife is trying to play Switzerland.”

Not His Decision

However, such validation did not last long. “It’s not your money to make decisions on”, commented one person. “You have no claim to it and can’t make any decisions regarding it. It’s Elise’s choice what to do with it now.”

A Lying Man

Serious controversy hit the comment section when the man revealed that Rea was not biologically related to her grandmother – she had been adopted. “That’s a pretty critical part of the story”, pointed out one critic. “You tried to sway opinion by leaving that out, and it explains why there wasn’t much of a relationship between your daughter and her ‘grandmother’.

Shifting Perspectives

This plot twist changed everything, and the initial validation the man was receiving rapidly turned into hateful accusations of him lying. In response to this uproar, the man simply wrote, “Adopted children are just as real as biological children”.
