A 17-year-old teenage boy was left a sizeable inheritance by his dad, but his mom and stepdad had other ideas for the money, leading to family drama. Here is what he had to say:
He Didn’t Get On Well With Them

The teenager explained, “For the past few months I haven’t had a good relationship with my mom or stepdad. I’m angry at them because 2 years ago when my dad passed away he left me an inheritance that I’m supposed to get on my 18th birthday. I’m also getting survivor’s benefits that my mom uses for me when I need things so is not like she used this inheritance for me.”
He Was Suspicious Where The Money Came From

The teenage boy’s mom and stepdad decided to buy a house and move into it, which felt strange to the individual since they had always lived in a three-bedroom apartment. The stepdad was a substitute teacher, and the mom worked part-time as a receptionist. They never had enough money for vacations or other luxuries, but somehow, they managed to afford a large house out of nowhere.
They Used It To Buy Their House

He became suspicious about where this money had come from, so he confronted his mom. When he did, his mom looked guilty until she finally admitted that they used some of the inheritance left by the dad to buy the house. The teenager was infuriated – this money had been left to him and he couldn’t believe his mom had gone behind his back and used it to buy a house!
He Was Upset

They tried to justify their actions by saying the house was also for the teenage boy, however, he knew this wasn’t true as they wouldn’t even be living there after turning 18. There was still some money left from the inheritance that could help with college expenses, but the teenage boy couldn’t believe their mom and stepdad used their money for something that benefited only them.
His Stepdad Was Hypocritical

He explained, “That amount could’ve helped me get my own damm house. Also, I think it is funny since my stepdad didn’t like my dad because since I was spending more time with him that meant my mom had to pay a little in child support. But he doesn’t care about using the money he left for me.”
He Wanted Him To Make Breakfast

The tipping point came last Saturday when the stepdad’s family visited and stayed at the house. The next morning, the individual was in a hurry to get ready for work and only had time to make eggs for themselves. When the stepdad asked why there wasn’t more food for his family, he explained that they were rushing to work and didn’t have time to make breakfast for everyone.
They Argued

This led to an argument, with the stepdad suggesting that it wouldn’t be a big deal if the individual was a little late for work. This annoyed the teenage boy as he didn’t want to be late for work, and was still feeling resentful over them using his money to help them buy the house.
He Spoke Up

The argument escalated, and his stepdad told him not to speak to him like that in his own house. In response, the teenage boy said “loudly actually it’s my house since you paid for it with my money, and don’t forget they stole from me.” There wasn’t a door between the kitchen and the living room, so everyone else heard his comments!
He Was Annoyed By His Mom’s Reaction

Now, his mom expected an apology for the embarrassment caused in front of the stepdad’s family. But the teenage boy thought the stepdad was in the wrong, for not only telling him to be late for work so he could make him food but also because he had stolen his money!
Was the Teenager in The Wrong?

The tension lingered even after the stepdad’s family had left, with the teenager feeling that they hadn’t done anything wrong and didn’t owe anyone an apology. However, their mom believed otherwise and saw their actions as those of a bad son and somewhat of a jerk.
The Internet Responded

One person said, “I think you should talk to an Estate lawyer because if your Dad structured his will properly, I would say your mother has misused funds put in a trust for you for her own personal benefit. Don’t pick a huge fight with your Mom and stepdad over this until you have the facts. But I really do think you should have a professional review the situation and let you know what your options are.”
Another Person Commented

“Spending your 17-year-old child’s inheritance on a house with your new partner is so selfish and foul. Even if you were 10 and had 8 years left to live in that house, they had no right to spend your inheritance on a house. That money was for your future not theirs.”
