His wife kept going into his sons room at random times of the day without knocking. His son grew frustrated, and his father agreed with him. He suggested to his son a plan to stop it from happening again, and now she refuses to talk to either of them. Here’s what the man had to say:
His Wife Didn’t Respect His Sons Privacy
The man said, “So here’s the problem, My 16-year-old son Simon moved out of the room he used to share with his little brother and got his own room a few months back. Ever since he’s been complaining about his mom barging in without knocking and interrupting his sleep and studying. Sometimes even when he’s changing.”
He Agreed With His Son
The man recognized that this was his mother, but Simon had told him that he didn’t feel his privacy was being respected and he was learning how to become an independent adult. Simon felt his mom should knock at the door before coming in, and the man agreed.
She Was Insulted
So the man decided to speak to his wife, explaining that he agreed with Simon’s request for privacy and that she should knock before entering his room. However, his wife didn’t take it well. The man explained, “She was like what? And no, we’re family, not strangers…do you really expect me to foolishly knock on the door 5 times a day?…that’s ridiculous!!! Also who knocks on doors in their own home?”
They Argued
The man stated that his family knocked on doors in their own home, to which she retorted that his family hated each other and the way in which they treat each other as strangers was shameful. But the man made clear that this was about respecting privacy.
She Wouldn’t Respect His Privacy
They argued for a while, which ended with the man declaring that if she didn’t start knocking on their son’s door he was going to get a lock for it. That very night, his wife went into Simon’s room at 11 pm, and he was asleep. He woke up with a jolt as her barging in scared him. After this, the man told his son to go ahead and buy a lock for his room with his own money.
She Was Angry He Bought A Lock
However, his wife was not happy when she discovered that Simon had bought a lock for his room. The man explained that she said this “teaches our children that they can ‘manipulate’ one parent into doing what they want.” She also felt caught off guard by it and thought he had gone behind her back on something he knew she would disapprove of.
He Disagreed With His Wife
However, the man stood his ground. He explained that Simon had bought the lock with his own money and he had already warned her that if she continued to go into his room without knocking he was going to get a lock. The man felt she should have expected this outcome.
His Brother-In-Law Took his Side
But his wife said that locks meant secrets, and secrets weren’t good to have in a family. The man’s brother-in-law was there at the time of this argument and he was sitting there watching. He then took the man’s side, which caused an even bigger argument!
Was The Man In The Wrong?
His wife then declared she would stop speaking to the man and Simon until they removed the lock. However, the man stood by his decision and had no intentions of doing so. Simon also wanted to keep it as he felt his mom wasn’t respecting his privacy. Nevertheless, doubts crept into the man’s mind and so he turned to the internet for advice.
